Wow, that sucks. A friend was telling me how her boy ran his own hosting business recently. These sort of difficulties crossed my mind. My sites's registered with Namecheap, no complaints, and I run my site off Blogger.
i worked for Interland/Web.com for around 10 years and it isn't that uncommon for the web host to purchase the domain for the customer and be listed as the owner.
Then maybe the domain was free or some bonus/extra offer included with the hosting..but it's definitely "semi shady". I mean you see what happened...
As for hosters....for shared you can check hostgator (I myself don't use shared any more, I use a VPS/hybrid at wiredtree).. and for domains namecheap or (what I use) dynadot.
