For the DV test setup, was the quality at 320x240 superior to a webcam(like the Logitech Quickcam Pro 4k) at 320x240? Bottom line is, if it's better quality but doable, then that's what I'd go for.

Just to check, can you use that DV setup for a two-way conversation over an instant messenger?

Thanks for the information!

I'd suggest reading the whole article but comparison shots are here...note the DV Rack reail for as much as a DV Camera whereas the Orange software is $20. Firewire just had iot over USB on streaming

i don't have a webcam to test and comapre to, but the problem will be the connection speed. 320x240 with windows media player is ~30KB/s w/out audio @ 30fps so if you are going to go to 160x120 then you should be able to have more connections, but of course the video will be smaller. i know with my camera i could zoom in across the street and see the information on a for sale sign, and the street was a 2 lanes each direction with a small median.

also, 15fps is not too bad and i would recommend going 15fps with a higher resolution over a smaller resolution with a higher fps.

what is your internet connection up speed?

i have no idea about 2way over an instant messenger as i don't have/use any instant messenger. personally i use teamspeak for talking to others online. after reading the above linked article it looks like the orangeware webcam DV does work with instant messangers.

yes aeternitas i'm aware of that. But there are differences Example the cheaper web cams will only do say 320x240 at 30fps where as you might be able to get 320x240 @ 60fps with a better one. As for Firewire connection vs USB. Firewire wins hands down. Faster speed and less cpu usage. but as I said I went from a Quickcam generic one to the 4000pro, and it was noticable. Cleaner pictures, videofeeds from my end were much sharper, it just has a better sensor in it.

For your purpose, I would recomend a "Network Cam" instead of a "webcam" because of the ease of use, it is always available, and you can now get them for well under $100. And best of all, no cpu usage :)
