hey all, my workplace needs a new webserver. It willbe used for simple SMTP/POP3 and Webhosting approx. 5 websites(will grow upto 10-20, busy ones..clients) The websites will have Streaming videos(animations @ 100kbps), programmed flash, etc.

Will be running Linux ~ Redhat9.

can you guys suggest a nice config? i want some help on the Hdd's(raid array?) and processors..can't decide between Opteron and Xeons..

your help is much appreciated :)

thanks.

sicne you are running linux.
Go with the opteron and take advantage of the 64 bitness, better value over the xeon, and it is faster then a xeon configuration.

I would run at least a raid 1 array for the HD. perhaps a couple of 160GB SATA drives at the very least
and about 2 GB of memory :)

When you plan to host 10-20 "busy ones, clients" on your servers stay away from IDE and SATA drives. Get a nice SCSI RAID-1 or RAID-5 array going is my opinion. And 2GB RAM for serving and mail? Are these people for REAL!? Hell 1GB would be more than sufficient for 10-20 busy sites even if they have dynamic (perl, php, jsp whatever) content.

BTW streaming video and flash aren't special. They won't require more really. Flash is just pushed to the client (browser) which renders & runs it.

I am thinking about the database load as well.

Certainly doesnt hurt to have more RAM.

I ony suggest SATA as I have no idea of his budget. SCSI would definitely be my choice :D

Raid 5 array would with one hotswap drive

The part I'm worried about is that its clients data ;) Meaning they put food on his and his employers table hehe. So you -don't- want to mess up their data. I think SCSI is a drop in the bucket and an expected expense when you're talking about business.

BTW for any server put a nice little UPS on it and a tape drive for backups (and rotate your tapes ;)
