web searches?

i'm not sure if networking is the best place for this, but what might seem like an obvious question to some has got me stumped.

if i put a web page on the net, and i want yahoo, excite, google, etc to actually link to it if i do a search, how do i make the connection. at the moment i have a site up with a good domain name, but i have searched with the majors and no responses are given to my page.

is there a meta tag in the header that i have to place or something? do i have to register with these search engines? do i just have to wait for the search engines to add my site to the database? i really have no idea.

any help will be very much appreciated,

I'm guessing that sites like google just eventually find your site. I did a search on my username (maetryx) on google and found several hits for things I've posted at the forums. Certainly no one registered those pages (which have probably been long extinct) with google.

I don't think you can register sites with google, but you certainly can with other major engines like Yahoo! and Altavista. If your site is added to the Yahoo! Directory you can bet Google will index it automatically when it's posted on Yahoo's new sites section. In general for a search engine look around on the page and see if they have a link saying something like "suggest a site" or "submit URL". If they do, click it and submit your site 😀
