Web hosting?

Okay, I was just wondering - you have to pay places like www.godaddy.com for them to host your domain. Now, I'm was doing a little thinking and came to the conclusion that you're only paying to use their bandwidth - correct? So, If I wanted to, I could host my own site I wouldn't have to pay them, and instead use my own bandwidth? If I did want to do this, what would i need - like to make my own domain? Windows Server 2003 Web Edition? An equivalent Linux solution? Something else? Thanks for your time.

you pay places like godaddy ~$8-9 a year to register the domain. unless you pay extra for their overpriced hosting, it does not include webspace. you can purchase the domain and then run your own webserver if you want.

thsi is correct but unless you have some super sweet upload speeds the site will be slow as balls

Okay, but why should i pay one company to host the domain? I mean, why give them money if I could do it myself? If I could - which was the second part of my question - how would i go about it?

You can host, but you better make sure you have nothing short of a T1 and lots of RAM and fast CPU. Its not quite as cut and dry as you're putting it. When you're paying them, you're also paying them to use their machines and backups. So, they perform nightly backups of your website, plus they have redundant pipes and maybe even machinery depending on what you get and who you go through. Save yourself the headache and let their data center monitor it.

Ultimately, its up to you though. 🙂

So you're saying I could host my own domain?

Do a search here, or get in touch with Rossman. There are plenty of pretty decent deals for hosting these days. If you don't have a high end system, and a fast connection, then it's really not worth it.

Hosting is pretty cheap these days. Just make sure it's somewhat reputable.

Yes, you can. But read my post.

if its for your business, have them host it. If it is for your own stuff, go ahead and try to host it on your own.

I understand that it would cost alot to host my own domain and site, but, I was wondering if it was possible, and if yes, then what OS/programs would I need to do it?

you would need a version of windows server or Linux w/ apache to host it yourself, i like others dont recomend it unless for some reason you have a T1 running to your house

there are great deals on server sapce out there if you want your own and many people here that sell space as well

Thank you for your simple, straightforward answer. That is exactly what I wanted to know. 🙂:cookie:

To expand on that, it's a two step process:
  • 1) Register domain through GoDaddy.com or NameCheap.com
  • 2) You can host your web sites from your home but I would not recommend it. Web hosting starts at $8.99/yr and goes up. If you still want to explore hosting from your home check out DSLWebServer.com for step by step instructions.

What I meant was: If i had the right hardware/software, would I be able to create and host my own domain By myself without having to register it somewhere ?

No you will always need to register it

You can host it, but your website will be slow as hell and no one will want to visit it. If you want a filserver, i dont think you even need to reg an addy. Just load Apache and memorize your ip

fvck! I knew I should have researched it before signing the contract...

2 Years @ 2500/Month

fvck fvck!!

Edited: corrected price...

You can also run apache on windows. Really not trying to support windows, but that option's better than yet another IIS/windows server on the internet.

Allrighty, thanks for yhe answers, guys. It would seem that I have a few new questions, though - What makes the companies like godaddy.com able to register/host domains? Oh, and like for a university, wouldn't they host their own domain? If they do, how would they do that?
