Web Hosting question, moving providers?

Okay I've had it with globat, server is slow, downstream is slow. It was okay 2 months ago, now it's just horrid.

The problem is how do I move hosts? I have everything "installed" there, all my email accounts are there, my domain name was gotten through them. If I switch providers how do I move everything?

not going to be easy; you'd have to transfer all email accounts etc, all the emails stored in those accounts will be lost.
plus your provider may give you hassles for transferring the domain names and buy it themselves and ask for a ridiculous price if you want it back.

heard loads of horror stories, your best bet may be to stick with them but threaten to leave

I always get my domains (5 so far) through someone other than my provider, even if it is cheaper or free to go through my provider.

If you own the domain name, just go to your registrar's website and change name servers to your new host's name servers. No need to worry about your domain name on that front, unless your current host owns it... hope the latter is not the case...

The data is just an FTP download/upload away from being moved.

As for email... say goodbye to what you have stored. You'll just have to setup new ones (same names) with your new host. There is no magical "export" feature.

Can't you go account by account in Outlook Express and just download all the email?

data: okay, I figured it was that easy... I'm guessing there might be some tweaking involved because the settings on the 2 server might be different? That's okay by me at least.

I don't even use my domain for email, it's all my friends. There's about 20 people I think using email accounts on my domain. I'll just have to let 'em know.

Are you using any PHP or other server-side scripting languages ? If so, just make sure your new host is at least on the same level and offer the same non-restrictions.

It actually is not as complicated as some people here said. If the control panel which you are using is cPanel then all that you need to do is have your new provider transfer the account. All you do is supply them your username and password and everything is transferred including cPanel setting and data but as far as I know email accounts are transferred, however, email messages are not.

First I'd transfer the domain name to godaddy.com. That will reserve it for you and they won't be able to do anything.

As for the website, you can just download it and upload it to the new site. No problem there except possible reinstalling scripts and changing settings and such.

As for emails, you'd have to findsome wayto transfer them if you view them online. Otherwise no problem there either. When the DNS changes go in the email will reroute to the new host anyway.

Using WHM, you can transfer everything, files, dns records, mailbox accts, mysql, everything. I do it all the time.

Cpanel is quite buggy, but still worth using because of how much faster you can accomplish certain tasks. (such as moving your website).

it does suck??? methinks not...

I remember the days that we spent moving customers over from our Ensim servers that we ended up getting rid of to our cPanel servers.
