I just found a webhost the other day, and have decided to sign up. For $4.95/mo (billed annually), you get unlimited space, plus one free domain name. Lots more too! Check it out here:
Looks good, but I'm wary of hosts that offer "unlimted" anything.
I've heard phpwebhosting is very good. I just set up an account with cyberwings and registered my domain with them also. $7 for registration, $17 a year for their #8 package. I figured for $24 it was worth a shot. I am pleased so far (although it's only been a day 😉 and it's my first experience with a pay host). Their website might look ghetto, but everyone I've asked who has used their service was pleased.
Does anyone know what the deal is on this HostOnce service? I figure there has to be a catch there somewhere, but I can't find it. Do they own your domain name and then sell it back to you? Do they throw up a ton of banners or pop-ups? What's the catch here? It's way too cheap to be real (until proven otherwise).
I found out long ago that there's really no such thing as "unlimited" web hosting. If you actually plan to use many Gigabytes of bandwidth, you won't last long on an "unlimited bandwidth" web host. That's because they all have clauses in the contract that allow them to cancel your account for whatever reason.
Who they're after are those that use very little resources but are attracted to the idea of unlimited web hosting.
So you'd do fine with them if you're new to hosting. Or you could just go with a more honest host to start off with.
Host once is great if it is for a site that doesn't get much traffic. I got it and have had multiple instances of 2 hour blocks of down time. The tech support isn't any good either. We didn't have mail for about 2 weeks and every email we sent it took a couple of days for them to get back. I am going to use it for a place to store pictures and movies and such, but not for my LAN parties webpage. It is too sporatic with down time.
I've had a pretty good experience with HostGo. I've been using them for multiple sites for over a year now. They are very reasonable and their tech support is excellent! My questions/problems are usually answered within 10 minutes. Check them out.
