Out of curiosity (I don't plan on changing from my current host anytime soon), will you be offering VPS options in the future for database intesive sites?

I just signed up for the Byte 3 plan. Always nice to support a fellow ATer. Now just have to figure out how to set up a website, and wait for this thing to propagate.

I already have a couple of questions, in case anyone wants to help out. I didn't find the answers in telnap's support area, nor did I see the answers posted to inquiries in this thread (at least not clearly enough for me).

1. If I have both a .com and .net address - can both be on the same acocunt (is this what addon or parked refers to)? Basically, I have four domains (2 .com and 2 .net) that I want to point to the same site - can I have them all on this one account?

2. Is this type of hosting secure enough to run a business site? (not selling products, but dealing with confidential client info)

Thanks.

I'm far from expert, but here goes. If your domaine registor offes it you can forward the domains with no site attached to the active site. I know that godaddy does this for free on domains registored with them.

I don' know if this is standard practice or not.

1. Yes, that's what I do.. I have something like 5 or 6 free .info domains that I got while I was setting up my site for free, then 1 .com that I finally settled down with, and you can attach them as "parked" domains.. addon domains are a lil different. So you set up your registrar to point to the telnap nameserver, and then the nameserver directs the parked domains..

addon domains, I believe, will point to a specific subdirectory within your account.. so say you want www.joebobspizza.com to point to your root directory, you could have www.joebobspizzaandwings.com point to a subdirectory using an addon domain.. then subdomains are the prefixes, like ilike.joebobspizza.com 🙂

2. That's something for devioustrap to answer... my site deals with member signup, but nothing drastically sensitive..

2. Well that would basically be a question for you to figure out. Basically all content that you put on your website is already public to an extent, so its your job to protect the content and make sure that no unauthorized people can get access to it. The server itself is very secure as a box, but its the clients responsibility to secure their own website. If you can make a secure website, I can tell you that it will be safe on the server.

Thanks for the info guys. One last thing I'm not so clear on:

What's the difference between parking a domain, and using domain forwarding?

I'm not 100% on this one, but this is what I believe at least:

Domain forwarding (or domain redirection) is when the registrar sets up your domain name so when someone accesses it, it turns them around and sends them to the forwarded address. In other words, the domain resolves to the regstrar first.

Parking a domain sets the DNS record to register the domian directly to the name server that is parking the domain. So in short, when someone goes to access your site, they are immediately pointed to the same name server for domain1.com as domain2.com and domain3.com, and then the name server points them to the correct webspace.

Basically, they serve similar functions, however parking a domain would be far more efficient (fewer hops, all direction is immediate)..

So why would anyone use redirection? if you don't have the ability to park a domain. Let's say your site is on a free service, like tripod.com or geocities, where you dont have the ability to park.. or, if your host doesn't allow it or you're limited to too few than what you need.

As far as number 2, the server is configured very nicely and DeviousTrap and his staff know what they're doing.

Beyond that, it's up to the actual website and how secure the scripts/permissions you use are. If you do a good job on your end, it should be just fine 🙂

Just signed up for $15.95/yr. Seems like one heck of a deal, especially with all the positive comments thus far.

Any suggestions for places to register my domain name?

1 & 1 is probably the cheapest place to register domains, but I don't really like their interface for managing stuff and their site seems to be really slow for me so it can take 20 minutes to change just a single thing after going through the 10 pages it takes to get to what you need.

Personally, I use GoDaddy.com for my main domains, and I'll be transferring my free .info sites there as soon as they're about to expire =-)

I agree 1and1 offer very cheap price for domain name, but their hosting plan is suck. Their ftp server doesnt permit resuming upload, I've contacted their support center for amonth but the problem is still.

So if you want cheap domain, go for 1and1, for hosting, i dont recommend it!

I bit the bullet to. There were some problems early on, and they moved my server to another machine due to some support problems at their data centers.

They were proactive providing notices about downtime, and they explained the causes. In one case it was an IRC server or something illegally setup.

Just having fantastico is great since I can test all the apps w/o all the installation time.

Judgement so far - not perfect buy pretty good.
