Web host

Not really any good category for this, so I guess I'll post it here. I need a cheap but quality webhost. For the time being, I'm just going to use it for hosting my email, with plans for a website later. No real traffic for now but maybe eventually. So a real cheap plan is nice for the time being, but it's been a long time since I've looked at hosts at all. Any suggestions? Experiences?

I'm currently with Dreamhost. They're cheap (especially if you use coupons), reliability is good but not great, speed is below average. The plus side is that it's cheap and you get lots of cool goodies like shell access, unlimited domains and email addresses, some cool one-click install software etc.

Thanks. I'm using godaddy at the moment but their site is a mess to get around, and half the links open entirely new windows. For a company that specializes in websites you'd think they could make a decent one of their own. I was with Cernax, which was for the most part incredibly simple. RIP

I highly recommend Dreamhost. I've tried Godaddy and a couple others and Dreamhost is the best.

Do they have joomla or fantastico? I plan on using Joomla.

Isn't Fantastico a program for installing 3rd party software? Dreamhost has one-click installs, I don't know if it's done through Fantastico or something else but it's straight-forward. Joomla is included in the one-click installs.

This is the one I used to use. They are really good I tried them after someone else here on the forum recommended.

That was probably me. I've been using Hawk Host for about a year now, and they're fantastic. I doubt you can do better in the price range.

Yes, but I haven't used them for a few years now so I don't know how competent they are these days. They used to have a blog that would detail their incompetence. Perhaps you can find that.

Just remember, anytime you see the word 'unlimited' on a hosts webpage make sure you read their ToS, AUP and SLA. You are in fact not getting unlimited resources, and if you try to use those unlimited resources most hosts will drop you from their client base.

In the case of dreamhost, they throttle your resource allocation(CPU, I/O) such that it's actually impossible to hit any of their quoted transfer allotments.

I used godaddy for a bit but I hated their site, the interface, and generally the whole way they did things.
Now using steadfast.net . $4.95 a month, $25 year, no setup fees.
http://steadfast.net/

100 MB of Disk Space
4 GB of Monthly Data Transfer
Hosting for 1 Domain
Unlimited Databases
Unlimited Email Accounts
Unlimited Subdomains
Enterprise SPAM Filtering
$24.95 per year - Free Setup

I wanted just a plain web host, no wizards or configuration websites, just the old ftp access, upload and they host it without all the extra junk.

Well I like the per year payment model, I don't need much. But I also like the one-click easy install stuff so I can get stuff going quick.
