Web host with non-local host for database access?

Hey all...

I'm looking for a web host that would allow access to the SQL database from a non-local host. I checked into HostPC.Com and they said that for secruity reasons they only allow access through the localhost.

I'm working on a project that integrates a web application and a clientside VB application, using a database. Basically, the VB App parses various pieces of data from the users, and updates the database. The website then displays this information in various forms.

Does anyone know of a webhost that allows for non-local host access to the database? Other features, such as amount of space, bandwidth, and the like are currently up in the air as to what it is needed. Right now the most important factor is the non-local host access.

You're likely going to need a dedicated server if you want remote access. No host that gives a damn about security is going to allow anything other than local.
 
Thanks guys. Not the answer I was hoping for...but the answer I expected.

So...does anyone know what kind of performance I could get out of 512k upstream on cable..? PC specs can vary to meet anything.

The particular project I'm working on is for an MMO that would parse Character Profile commands. (VBApp updates database with commands from the game, website displays the profiles). The number of connections then, could obviously vary depending on the popularity...but could be massive (considering the number of servers and the number of people playing).

Might be able to manage $50 a month...but it'd be a stretch (paying off a wedding, saving for a house, working on a baby, etc etc etc etc).

Requirements:
3 SQL Databases
Remote Access
?? MB space
?? Bandwidth

Am I expecting too much for my budget..?
 
$50 per month should be enough if you can find someone to SHARE a DEDICATED SERVER with.

You should expect to receive at least a Celeron 2.40, 512MB RAM, 40GB Hard Drive, 500GB - 1000GB data transfer (bandwidth) but it will be UNMANAGED ... so one of you need to be an experienced system admin.

I share a dedicated server with a few other AT'ers located at The Planet data center and so far it's worked out great. Each person shares in the cost and in return we get a dedicated server with some nice resources.
 
What computers do you have at home? It may be easier/cheaper to do it at home even though upsteam speed from cable might not be great

Also, is this for work? If so, tell them about your situation
 
Cable upstream is 512k (starting Feb 1st).

My personal computer is an Athlon XP 2400, 512MB DDR, 40GB HD.

The computer that I currently use as a file server is an old AMD K6-2 450, with 256MBs of ram, and a 20GB harddrive.

What about the bandwidth. I use Mediacom (www.mchsi.com) as my cable provider, and I wonder what would be said about having excessive amounts of upstream traffic. Or if they even allow it...(will have to look into that).

This is a personal project. I work for a laser company, but only in production. I've been trying to break into their Graphics and/or IT department for a year, but I don't kiss enough ...

Running your own server is frought with many pitfalls.
1) Is it allowed in your ISP's Terms Of Service (TOS)?

2) Do you have the required knowledge and dedication to not only properly secure the server, but keep it patched in a timely manner?

3) Do you have the knowldege to properly back up what needs to get backed up?

Don't get me wrong, I have one up and hosting a few commercial sites, with mysql databases. It is sort of like owning a dairy though, if the sites are very important, SOMEONE with the ability to troubleshoot the hardware and software needs to be available 24/7.
