Doesn't seem to be a suitable forum for this question so since I'm a programmer trying to learn website programming I'm posting it here.

Does anyone have any recommendations for shared web hosting?

On this website
http://www.webhostingmasters.com/
fatcow is the top pick.
and here http://webhostinggeeks.com/
inmotion is the top pick.

I read the hostgator review and it says there are some indications
that uptime and page loading speed may be a concern with hostgator but
that there's probably a lot of BS review on the net so it's a bit hard
to tell what hostgator performance is like.

I'm guessing this could apply to any web hosting service and a host
that has performed well for the last six months could start having
problems in the future.

Does anyone have experiences of web hosts or has anyone swapped web
hosts to try and get a better one? With hostgator (and probably
others) you get a better price the longer you sign up for.

(Also, is it easy/ viable to transfer a website from one host to
another or do you have to recreate the website? What if you used the
site builder provided by the web host?)

TIA

I have been using hostgator for over a year and have nothing, but great things to say about it. I switched over from telnap.

I only wish hostgator had cheapo ASP.NET hosting plans.

I use HostGator also, haven't had any issues.

Back when I needed cheap ASP.NET hosting I used SoftSys: http://www.softsyshosting.com/ ($3.50/mo). That's only if you're interested in ASP.NET programming though, otherwise that's limiting the host you choose unnecessarily.

Also a good review site / forum for web host info is http://www.webhostingtalk.com .
Probably a lot of the "web host review sites" online are really just affiliates pushing one particular host.

I've used SoftSys shared/VPS hosting also, and they have great support that even helped me with issues that weren't caused by them (thank you windows update). The pricing is good, but they had a couple hours downtime from network issues.

I recommend a virtual private server such as Linode - it's $20/mo but you can learn *nix and control every aspect of your web server ( and run it as a simultaneous db server, etc ).

Not to mention the service is FAR superior to shitty shared hosting.

I have been using RackSpace.com for about a year now, using both a ded. sql cloud server and a web server. I have received VERY good, responsive support services for various type issues, from highly technical to easy setup questions, and have always gotten a quick answer, or someone to work with me for as long as needed.

i would like to also respond to what you said about learning website programming, i would recommend plurasight, online-ondemand video instruction (very good) and learn mvc3 as you learn website programming. and sharepoint. good luck,
