Web hits/Mastery?

Any of you Webmasters have good strategies for getting your pages as the #1 hits or somehow get on top of search engines?

Make it useful/entertaining enough that lots of people visit it, and google rates it higher.

Have other people link your site to generate better traffic.

That's how google ranks you.

This is a big website I am on and basically would just need to "learn" advertising on the web all over as none of the classes that I've taken on my way to my Business-Marketing degree has worked.
