Web Design

I searched and found another thread dealing with a similar question, but I thought I would ply the ATOT crowd with a new thread.

What are some of the best web design firms you know of? Ones that are good at medium to large-scale projects and hopefully priced reasonably. I'm not looking for budget design, I can afford $200 / hr if need be, but I need quality, consistent, and fast coding.

Any suggestions where to look? I don't want to take this grant money and just toss it in a gutter.

One of the things I tell folks who are unassure about hiring a web designer (which I am myself) is to goto...

http://www.rentacoder.com

And put up a request, design budget, and put agreed to fees in an escrow account. That way you will be assured of a design that meets your specs (and a designer knows the money is in the "kitty" so they won't get ripped off, too).

That's a lot better than searching around and trying to find a good design house (all will request fees, IMO, that are beyond the actual worth <--- too many templates out there to justify original pricing).

If you want to deal with the big boys: one of the best online design houses for online businesses is http://www.ceonex.com/ but it has a very high pricetag (expect to pay $1500+ for a website). http://www.pixelbrick.com/ also has a rep of being a very good design house for commerce. Those houses do more than just whip up a web site, they will do the flow analysis and all essential for marketing your products(s) and services.

these guys do pretty good work, but they are local for me in NJ. i prefer handshake type deals over just internet contact, but that's just me.

i have, however, used a service similar to rentacoder and have been reasonably satisified with that as well.

You'll need to give more detail, but I can probably recommend a few places.

What other details would you need?

Also Terumo, thanks for the tips.

Something else I need to point out. YMMV, but what I'd do in looking for a perfect web site is to divide the project into three areas...

1. Graphics (logo/banner/elements).
2. Programming (scripts/coding).
3. X/HTML/XML coding.

The reasoning for that is: no one can be an expert in all three of those fields (just too much to learn and specialize in -- each is a lifetime career). Also, you will get exactly what you paid for for each section, and the "rush" to meet a deadline isn't complicated (most of the finishing work is done right before the deadline, which can make a design outcome really iffy). By breaking a design down into parts, you'll also have the luxury of getting the best of all three worlds, not just a jack-of-all-trades solution. It's also very cost efficient as you can monitor the exact pricing for each section -- something difficult to do in a one bill environment (you don't know if you're paying more for leafing through stock photos; or someone spending their hours searching for a template for a database schemea).

Yes, it's not the simple route and more involved, but for those who are business types and on shoestring budgets, every penny saved is profit (or reinvested into other areas that increase the bottomline). It's always better to venture in the complicated world of web design in piecemeal, as you'll have a solid foundation to build an "empire" upon.

This is a good thread and I need design and coding work done to on a site. I will check the links posted, but they look like high-end shops that would charge an arm and a leg for their services.

I'd suggest you hit coolhomepages.com and check out the ones you like... dig deeper and find out who did theirs. $200/hr can bring in some good names.
