Web Design: How much to charge for ONE page?

LanceM

I've passed along a small web job to a local college student I know. It's for a small, but relatively well-off nearby business (wedding services).

They want a redesign of ONLY their first page, and a image slideshow script (where every 5 seconds, the old pic fades out and a new one fades in).

Now he's asking me how much he should charge them for a "college student/one page+script" job, and I'm stuck on this one. The way I figure, quite a bit of the work on a site goes into the first page anyway, since so many others can use it as a template.

Thanks, guys and gals.

$100, only after the design has been approved and requested changes made by buyer.

The script could be downloaded from hotscripts.com and would require no work.

Unless heavy graphics design is required, I too agree with something around the $100 range. Time spent talking it over with customer should also be billed though, in my opinion. Just in case they decide to go back and forth on designs and cause more and more work...

Well maybe they are not programmers? I mean, you don't need a computer science degree to write web applications, but it helps...

OP: Just charge by the hour - if it takes 5 hours at $20/h then $100 is fine.

Why I am a sucker if I am too freaking busy to bone up on my html and build my own business site? Plus I want it to look professional. As much as I want to do it myself, I am juggling a million things now and don't have the time. Sheesh, whaddya think, everyone has as much free time as you?

That, and the fact that there's always somebody out there that can do that better than me. If I had enough money and a business that need a good webpage, I'd be more than happy to pay somebody knowing it'll look 100x better than what I could have done.

You're an idiot. Time = Money. Why are they going to want to invest hours upon hours and take away from their productivity time to learning HTML/scripting language, then actually coding the site and the script when they can hire Joe Blow for a couple hundred dollars and get exactly what they want.

Not everyone sits in their parent's basement all day like you and has more time than they know what do with it.

Let me tell you something about me.

Firstly i taught myself scripting html, php, java, etc since the age of 12 as a hobby... lets see i'm 20 now. So thats eight years of webdesign experience, and no i dont get my income from webdesign, i usally do free jobs for people. Webdesign is a hobby for me.

Secondly i actually dont game much anymore, I'm proud to say i have been clean for about 6 months 🙂 games are killer on time.

Thirdly, I work as an IT Tech while going to college at NIU Majoring in Biology.

Fourthly, i'm married so dont even try the smart ass remarks about lack of a women becuase of too much time spent gaming etc.

I think that about covers it, bash all you want from there. 🙂 i will probably get a laugh or 2

Care meter is at 0.

Web design is a profitable skill just like any other. Anyone could go to college and learn biology, so why don't you work for free when you get out of college?

If you really did as much web design work as you claim to, you'd start charging because you'd be damn sick of people getting a free ride from you and then expecting you to bend over backwords everytime they want a change.

Making a website for your mom doesn't count. If a company is going to use the website I design for increasing their profits, shouldn't I be entitled to something for helping them increase their profits? HELL YES.

404 care not found

WTF is scripting HTML? And if you're doing web design for free, you're a sucker.

I'm sorry, your little e-penis trantrum is more than played out on these forums. Contribute something positive or shut up.

Ask some questions first:
- will it require custom graphics or are some provided already prepped for the web
- photo gallery need to be Javascript or Flash based (which is nice using an external XML file)
- will the page be used as a template for other pages, and if so, will it need a style sheet for formatting?

After all the questions, figure out the time involved...

Do you have a standard hourly rate or are you by project?

I think $400 per page is sort of a de facto standard price.

WIthout discriminating between simple or complex pages, it all gets swept together into the $400 / page.

I've been designing websites for a few years now, I charged Devious $30 to do his main pages, being the nice guy that he is, he gave me $60. It's all about the difficulty of work, no set rates for me.

400 for a single page? BS. I'd like to be able to charge $400.

It really depends who you're working for. It's all about the level of service/support the client requires and your relationship with them.

I'd charge a friend much less than a random business.

In that case. Will you help me with my website? I'm willing to pay a small fee.

i hope you're joking.

i noticed the biggest reason freelance web designers dont make much is the price undercutting. There's a market out there that will pay $400 a page easy, that rate is def not unheard of. It's up to you to find that market. That market wont be found here, way too many educated IT lurkers and posters. You really need a business degree nowadays as a web designer to understand how to be profitable and get paid for your work like you should.

With that said, charge the student $200, roll up a doobie, and bang out that project in 2 hours.
