Want to allow grandkids to communicate with me while I am on travel.

Also, should I just use IM like Yahoo or setup Skype.

Systems available are XP and Win7

Just use whatever is built into your notebook. That's one less thing to pack and take with you.

For software just use whatever you are familiar with. If your grandkids are also familiar with it (and already use it) even better. Why I suggest the familiar software is in case you have to provide any tech support in case it doesn't work.

Systems at home do not have a webcam.

Notebook that I take on travel does have one built in.

Presently no one use the IMs built into Yahoo.

You just missed a good deal on the Logitech 910 for $50 @ 6th Ave. If you want immediate gratification then Best Buy has it on sale this week for around $70. I think it's around $60 on Amazon.

It's a full 1080p HD webcam with excellent audio.

Skype works well for me. I talk to my Mom in FL once a week instead of a phone call. Works great plus she can see her grandson.

Any current logitech lineup will do the job. They have the 720p and up capable resolutions out there now, if quality is a concern.

But I think the iPod 4g/android etc is gaining notoriety in ease of use for general caming. It costs a bit more, but in return is mobile, works in integration with skype, yahoo, etc without issues.

A week ago I got a webcam because I wanted to communicate with friends that I met oversea.

I heard the Pro c910 is the best. However it doesn't support 64 bits Windows, nor mention Linux any where on the box, and live chat is 720p like everyone else.

I picked the Creative Live! Cam Socialize HD AF because it support Windows 7 64 bits, and Linux with Skype. And, it work flawlessly out of the box for Win7 64 bits, and Linux 64 bits.
Built in noise cancelling microphone.
Wide angle (the best feature IMHO).
Autofocus.

And the mod/admin post a hardware thread in the wrong forum LOL.
Shouldn't this thread be in Peripherals/General Hardware?

I'll second that. I bought one for my daughter and it's really well made.
