Web cams at work?

Do you guys use em? I'm talking about using them for business. We are looking into either purchasing more video conferencing systems for our conference rooms or just the possibility of distributing web cams and using something like webex to communicate. I have a webcam now at work but just use it for personal use, nothing professional.

Anyone?

I'd rather not see some of the people I talk to in conference calls. Then they couldn't see me making faces about their stupid comments. I like to keep it so that there is nothing a mute button can't hide.

Just ask yourself... "would this purchase pay for itself in added production levels?" (Hell no.)

ER? My work is performing infront of my webcam, I don't think I could get by without it.

Why I'm afraid of web cams:

Way back when the Internet was young Microsoft released Netmeeting. Being a technology company, I made a project to investigate the software to see if there was anyway it could be used for a billable service.

I was working late one night around 8pm or so, and had Netmeeting open, created a room, and dove into a tech manual as large as a dictionary. People are coming in and leaving the Netmeeting room every few seconds, and I'm checking out all the features you can put on the room. Well, as I'm reading, my friend walks in my office behind me, stops, and yells "AW!!! YOU i love you!!!!"

I look up, and to my horror, there is a shirtless guy on my screen rubbing his nipples and pounding away at something just below camera view (and I'm sure that something was a body part). My friend runs out of the room, then seconds later the PA system comes on with the anouncement "<Fritzo> is a buttmonkey...he's watching gay porn in his office!" To this day, nearly a decade later, they're still telling that story.

::rocks back and forth:: The horror....the horror....

You should get a really long USB cable and hide one of those cameras in one of the bathrooms.... Plug it into a workstation that everyone has access to and see how long they keep them around.

So they didn't know you watched gay porn and just because you got caught it's somehow Netmeeting's fault? :p

lol I dont know, my web cam is public and on every day I'm at work all day, its not that big of a deal to me. The polycom systems come in great handy when working with a big group for discussion or instruction. The ability to share sound and video, as well as your desktop if you want, is awesome. Polycom has desktop software that you can install on your machine and connect to a meeting just like a polycom system if you have a web cam. Its neat stuff and all you have to pay for is the web cam and licensing.

they installed cisco webcams on everyone's desks here. they automatically start displaying when two internal employees are on a call.

most people, including myself, have turned the webcam away toward something other than ourselves.

Use polycom video conferencing units everywhere.

At my last job we switched from Polycom units to Sony hardware (IIRC, we were using PCS-1 at remote sites)

A post-it note or a small piece of electrical tape will ensure that. ;)
