Weather guys broadcasting directly from a Hurricane's path

meant to post this yesterday after watching a reporter who could barely talk because of the wind/rain in his face...

what value does having a live report from a reporter standing in the area where the hurricane is hitting? why not just broadcast from the lobby of whatever hotel they are staying at and just show their camera footage of any damage they witnessed/filmed earlier?

not sure why they need to be broadcasting from the pier at the beach showing the waves hitting or standing outside in 90 mph winds....

Pretty much every major news outlet has a crew down there so it isn't like anyone has a competitive advantage by doing this...

I doubt the reporters and the rest of the crew are adrenaline junkies looking for a rush...

I like it for that ever so slight chance that they get hit with something or a gust of wind is so strong you see them fall down lol

That alone makes it worth it, otherwise I don't care, just mount a camera out there and be done with it

i hate those idiots. especially when they are like talking directly to the meterologist who's back at the station:

idiot in storm: "so tom, what can we expect as the storm gets closer?"
tom: "A LOT MORE WIND AND RAIN YOU IDIOT."

by and large, I find weather news to be painfully boring unless it directly affects me.

In Portland whenever there's the slightest chance of a flurry the stations invariably send crews to the highest points they can get to in their big antenna vans. At that point the poor bastards start progressing through increasingly severe hypothermia over several hours as they wait in vain to film even one elusive snowflake.

That's not as bad as when there's reporters out in countries where there are events going on where ever little bit of help counts, such as, floods, for example. They have a boat/helicopter, and they could be loading up people, and yet there they are with the crew just waltzing around, pointlessly, at least in the eyes of the people in danger.

Really stupid, if you ask me.

Not really. A reporter's job is to be an observer. If they're busy being a medic or rescuer, the story goes unreported and they don't get paid.

I've never understood the need for that silly reporting. As others have said there is always the promise of seeing a shouting reporter get impaled, but sadly I've never had that pleasure.

Reporters do stupid things. I saw a show where a female reporter did a bit about ostrich farming and picks up an egg while surrounded by 6 nesting ostrich's that are not at all happy. In another news clip, the reporter visits a game reserve and bends down to pet the cute sun bear which almost removes her hand and face.

but what is more important, using those reporter's resources (helicopter, van, etc) to save lives or to have the story reported? (this would apply to situations like Katrina or disasters where people need to be airlifted or evacuated)..
