Yes we do, actually. Ignorance by itself, yes, will never go away completely... but ignorance that results in violence, not because of the usual motives of money or power but because of whatever crazy homophobic reason the assailants had, is something that we have a long way to go on.

Implied in the statement "We still have a long way to go" is acknowledgement of progress already made. Obviously things like this were much more common in the past, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot more to be done. "The last mile", so to speak, is always the longest and most challenging.

The human animal is violent by nature; most of us can overcome that, but some can't. If these thugs hadn't beaten the guy because he was gay, they'd have found another reason - he looked at them funny, wore clothing they didn't like, or liked the wrong sports team. Heck, some criminals have admitted to assaulting others for no reason at all - they just felt like it. That sort of thing is never going to stop happening.

Why do certain people seem to have a vested interest in arguing that this crime had nothing to do with homophobia? Yes guys, there can be a wide variety of different motives for an assault. Homophobia is one of them. It does happen. Deal with it.

Your logic is what's idiotic. Dainthomas's post in no way implies that there aren't places outside of Texas where a gay might similarly be attacked. But I guess you need to see an actual logical argument to make clear how illogical your own post is:

Premise 1: People in the state of Texas hate gays.
Premise 2: People in the state of Mississippi hate gays.
Fact: A gay man in Texas was violently attacked by four men shouting anti-gay slurs.
Question: Why was the gay man in Texas violently attacked?
Answer: All you have to do is read as far as the word "Texas".

That answer in no way contradicts Premise 2.

Awesome, something more ignorant than the post I originally quoted, someone defending the post I originally quoted. Amazing.

That doesn't mean we don't have a long way to go...

Many bad things are never going to stop happening completely. That doesn't mean efforts to make them more and more rare are futile. We do have a long way to go, whether we ultimately get there or not is less important than the struggle to do so.

Stuff like this won't happen when white people aren't harmed because they are white and the same for muslims, blacks, christians, jews, etc. Look at the hate we have here every day. I wonder how many do not act on their hate only because of the fear of getting caught. We are the ultimate killer species kept in check by the pretense of civilization.

I met a man who loved himself and he was profoundly gentle.
