... before stuff like this doesn't happen anymore.

http://www.dallasvoice.com/paris-attack-1093329.html

A 26-year-old gay man says he was the victim of a brutal hate crime early Sunday in Reno, Texas — a small town just east of Paris and about 100 miles northeast of Dallas.

Burke Burnett said he was at a private party at about 1 a.m. when four men suddenly attacked him, stabbing him at least twice with a broken beer bottle before throwing him onto a fire. His attackers yelled things like “pussy-ass lovely human,” “gay bitch” and “cock-sucking punk,” Burnett said.

Burnett said it took 30 stitches to close stab wounds to his back and forearm, as well as a cut above his left eye. He also sustained second-degree burns and severe bruises.

“They knew I was gay,” Burnett said Monday. “I’m convinced they were trying to kill me.”

Jeff Sugg, interim chief of the Reno Police Department, released a statement Monday afternoon saying: “The Reno Police Department is currently investigating an aggravated assault that took place last weekend. The investigation is ongoing and additional information will be provided when available.”

Reno police officials declined to further discuss their investigation.

Burnett said the officer investigating the case told him the attack will be classified as a hate crime. But Burnett said his attackers, whose identities are known, remain at large, and the officer told him it could be two weeks before they’re arrested.

“I’m scared for my life,” Burnett said, adding that he’s staying with a family friend. “I’m scared to go home. These guys have nothing to lose.”

Burnett said he grew up in Paris and came out as gay when he was 15. He knows at least one of his attackers personally. Two of the suspects have been to prison and may be on parole, he said.

Burnett said he’s attended several parties at the residence and was invited by his straight friend who lives there. He arrived at the party several hours earlier with three gay friends. However, the group left after someone at the party was overheard making anti-gay remarks such as, “These faggots don’t deserve to be here. Somebody needs to get them out of there.” Burnett said he didn’t hear the remarks and wasn’t aware of them when he returned to the party later in the evening with one of his girlfriends.

Burnett said he was sitting inside a large metal shed called “the party shop” when he was blindsided with a punch to his left eye. When he got up and tried to defend himself, one of his attackers stabbed him in the back with a broken beer bottle. Burnett called the stab wound “a kill shot” but said fortunately it didn’t puncture his lung.

One of the suspects stabbed him a second time in the right forearm — cutting into the muscle but missing an artery — before he was thrown onto a lit burn barrel.

At that point, some of Burnett’s girlfriends managed to slow down the attackers enough so that he could escape to a vehicle. None of the other 20 people at the party attempted to stop the attack, he said.

Burnett’s girlfriends eventually drove him to a hospital in Sulphur Springs, about 30 miles away.

Burnett said he’s hoping none of his injuries are permanent. He’s scheduled to return to the doctor on Friday.

Chivas Clem, one of Burnett’s gay friends who accompanied him to the party, contacted Dallas Voice and other media outlets about the attack Monday morning. Chivas said he fears people in the small, conservative town will try to brush the incident under the rug.

“I intend to make sure the Police Department follows through with this, and that the local press covers it,” Chivas said. “When I saw him [Burnett], I vomited because he looked so bad — and I cried.”

Another one of Burnett’s gay friends, Austin Holloman, said he’s heard police are considering downgrading the charges to misdemeanors because the attack occurred at a party. Holloman said he recently moved to Paris to live with his partner, who’s from there and has known Burnett since childhood.

“We don’t want people thinking this is OK in this area,” Holloman said. “We plan on being here forever.”

I don't understand why the charges should be downgraded to misdemeanors.

Misdemeanors? Stabbing with a broken beer bottle to create cuts like they did is intent to kill.

Absolutely terrible.

Disgusting..

I'll never understand where the hate and rage comes from.. What would drive someone to do this simply over someone else sexual preference.

What do suspect he might have done to deserve this ?

Staff the business end of a glory hole ? Rape the livestock ? Comment on how one of the good ol' boys looked in their Wranglers ?

The "why" is why it is classified as a hate-crime. Unprovoked save for the fact that they were near people who hated homosexuals.

All you have to do is read as far as the word "Texas".

You're more ignorant than the attackers in the OP, or I guess you don't think that any homosexuals get attacked outside of Texas. Fucking idiot.

Seems like a rather one-sided story that's presented, missing a lot of pertinent information. Based on the information provided it's pretty despicable.

I'm trying to find more info on it, but everything seems to be a parrot of the source I provided in the OP.

EDIT: But there's an update: http://www.dallasvoice.com/breaking-2-arrested-gay-mans-beating-1093490.html

Two men have been arrested in connection with the brutal assault of a gay man early Sunday in Reno, Texas — which the victim and his friends say was a hate crime.

Reno Police Chief Jeff W. Sugg announced in a two-sentence statement this morning that Daniel Martin, 33, and James “Tray” Mitchell Laster III, 31, have been arrested in the beating of 26-year-old Burke Burnett.

Burnett said he was stabbed at least twice with a broken beer bottle and thrown onto a fire at a private party early Sunday, by up to four men who yelled gay slurs during the attack. Burnett needed more than 30 stitches to close stab wounds to his back and forearm, as well as a cut above his left eye from being sucker-punched at the start of the attack. He also suffered second-degree burns from being thrown onto a lit burn barrel.

Martin and Laster were arrested late Tuesday. Each is charged with one count of aggravated assault with a a deadly weapon, and one count of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury — first-degree felonies punishable by five to 99 years in prison. According to Sugg’s statement, the investigation is ongoing.

Reno police spokeswoman Alicia Myrick said it will be up the Lamar County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the case is prosecuted as a hate crime.

“That’s not our decision,” Myrick said.

Under Texas law, there is no penalty enhancement for a hate crime if the offense is a first-degree felony, making it highly unlikely that prosecutors would pursue such a designation.

More to come …

So, apparently it's back to being a felony. Good.

Not really. How often does this happen? Edge cases don't mean much. Yeah it's terrible that it happens at all, but bad things happen in the world all the time. You're never going to eradicate ignorance completely.

People smoking weed are extremely threatening and dangerous to any roving bags of Doritos they might run across.

I'll agree with you, but only if you count all of east Texas and all of Louisiana, Mississippi as the "Edge Case".

Your logic is what's idiotic. Dainthomas's post in no way implies that there aren't places outside of Texas where a gay might similarly be attacked. But I guess you need to see an actual logical argument to make clear how illogical your own post is:

Premise 1: People in the state of Texas hate gays.
Premise 2: People in the state of Mississippi hate gays.
Fact: A gay man in Texas was violently attacked by four men shouting anti-gay slurs.
Question: Why was the gay man in Texas violently attacked?
Answer: All you have to do is read as far as the word "Texas".

That answer in no way contradicts Premise 2.

Yes there may be more here.

unfortunately news organizations are businesses that need to sell type or get clicks so the truth is kind of secondary.

I doubt some back woods hillbillies just decided to straight up jack the local queer. Unfortunately that story sell s and that is what you will get to read.

on another note these people should be charged with what they did not why they did it.

I don't doubt it one bit. You have never been to East Texas have you.

I realize you live in what I can only assume is an extremely gay friendly area (Flower Mound,) but in small Texas towns there's still a lot of intolerance. Lest we forget that less than 15 years ago a black man was dragged to death in Jasper, Texas, to this day a hotbed of racial hatred and small town close-mindedness.

Yes we do, actually. Ignorance by itself, yes, will never go away completely... but ignorance that results in violence, not because of the usual motives of money or power but because of whatever crazy homophobic reason the assailants had, is something that we have a long way to go on.

Implied in the statement "We still have a long way to go" is acknowledgement of progress already made. Obviously things like this were much more common in the past, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot more to be done. "The last mile", so to speak, is always the longest and most challenging.
