Why would you "remake" a game that's barely 5 years old?

Fallout 4 is coming soon anyway.
We may not share the same definition of soon, as it's not even been released.

I have thought over the years of replaying F3, but concerned it wouldn't have aged well and would mire my memories. As sad/predictable as it is, if they re-released it with all DLC and jacked up graphics for next-gen I'd probably buy it again.

Are you sure you updated the right file? I remember when I first tried it, it didn't work. I then figured out there are actually 2 files that are the same thing, but in different directories (the game only uses 1 of the 2). I just happened to update the wrong one.

Its been a while, but as I recall, there's the file in the My Documents directory and the one in the Steamapps directory. I've tried both, same result. When I played through FO3, I did so on my backup/test tower, which used Vista 32 and a Radeon HD 5670. Haven't really played the game since because its effectively broken. I understand it has even more issues with Windows 8.x as well, based on people bitching in the Steam Forums for it.

I like to think Fallout 4 hasn't been announced because Bethesda is making their own in house engine and scrubbing Gamebryo entirely.

For what it's worth, I recently finished a full playthrough of FO3 with all the DLC on Windows 8.1 with only the normal amount of crashes. I did mod the heck out of it this time through, but overall it played quite well.

I still pick up Fallout 3 every now and then, but the experience is the same as every Bethesda game. It's like spawning into Disneyland, and being really excited about how cool the place looks, only to realize with slow-dawning horror that all the people are zombies, and all the stores sell the same weird array of useless items and have no money.

I'm going to nitpick, but "coming soon" and "not released yet" go hand in hand. If a thing is coming soon, it's safe to assume that it's not yet been released. It's in the definition of "coming soon."

You probably meant to say "hasn't been announced yet."

Fallout 3 was awesome, as was New Vegas. But I must admit that F3 was a bit more dark, grim and a better experience (for me) than NV.

Can't wait to see how Fallout 4 will turn out.

Fallout 3 doesn't need a remake. It still looks good today, and there's a high res texture pack that makes things even better. Also the Game of the Year Edition already has all DLC integrated. As for bugs, in 140+ hours of gameplay I experienced a single crash to desktop, and didn't observe any gameplay bugs.

Some people are way too hard on Bethesda. They're one of the few companies still focused on amazing single player experiences, and games with that kind of open-world complexity are bound to have some bugs.

The Gamebryo engine is absolutely fine for this purpose. I'm playing through Oblivion for the first time right now and the game still looks really nice. I'm using the texture pack with no other graphical mods.

Your anecdotal experience is great but other users have had crashing. I get a crash in F3 maybe once every 90 minutes. It is not enough for me to rage over or anything, I just save, but it is annoying.

However I have found I don't have the time to go through the game. I have started a number of times but titles I am interested in just keep on flooding through the gates.

My biggest complaint is the move speed, however I don't want to modify it and break the game in relation to enemy move speeds. I wonder if there is a mod that will increase everyone's speed a good 25%.

If you wanna increase EVERYONE'S speed, use the console command:

If you wanna increase YOUR running speed, theres mods for player perks which do it.

In fact I've got several mods installed right now that boost walking to about 160% and also a sprint mod. It uses AP instead of Fatigue.

Are these other users overclocking?

Are you overclocking anything?

I'm not saying the game doesn't have bugs, but stability observations on overclocked hardware are meaningless.

"Fix all the bugs" he says. As if Bethesda could do that.

Too bad FO3 is a bad game compared to NV.
FO3 was better in terms of environment and the world it was a set in. NV was better in terms of having a story that wasn't nonsensical and well thought out, but it felt like a FO theme park. But, that has been the case for years with both studios. Obsidian actually hires decent writers, but stumbles on actual delivery. Bethesda hires some great scenery guys, but stumbles on story.

Oh, and both are like "QA? Testing? Wtf are those?"

Just made a crapload of recipes for NV.

Bulk ammo breakdown.
Cutting boards into chessboards.
Chessboards into any wooden weapon.
Basic melee weapons from scrap metal.
Revamped how I made scrap metal.

I think I might do basic armor next.

Negative. Tried that fix, on my C2D E8500, on my i5 2400, and my i5 4670. No go under Vista 64 or 7 x74. Never tried under 8.1 x64.

Works fine under 64-bit, though it's possible Vista was the culprit in your case. Unlike Vista, Win7/8 came with native DX9 support which is quite possibly what was causing your problems and not the underlying OS. I've played through them on my W7-64 with zero crashes.

On a broader topic, my experience with W7-64 is that it is more compatible with older games (including early XP games) and XPSP3 was. Good luck.

May have been alluded to or mentioned already but I also look forward to a remake of the mods for the remake of Fallout 3.

It's probably this. I've replayed it at least once and probably twice on my Win 7 x64 i5-2500 quad core and adding the fix made in 90% less crashy. The other 10% is just the price you pay for a Bethesda game.
I crashed probably every couple hours in most areas using the same CPU & OS, which I consider acceptable. Before mods, it was unplayable for me, even on XP 32 I was getting literally more than a crash a minute. This last playthrough I had almost a hundred mods loaded before I finally got one that kills my ability to save even when removed from my system.

Also, FWE completely revamps the game. No longer do I need to fix myself a snack while I empty magazine after magazine into one monster. Well, except for Super Mutant Overlords.

Mods (and the too-long delay between FO games) are why I'm leaning toward not buying Fallout Forever on Day 1. Ordinarily I'd buy something I so enjoy at full price just to support the developer even knowing it would be months before patches and modders made it worth playing, but I'm pretty much gotten over that by now. Now I'm thinking just pick it up when its GOTY package hits $20 on Steam.
