We need to send a DVD player to my brother in Iraq

My brother called my family up today after about a month in Bagdad. Basically, he told us the people are nice but the city is mindnumbingly boring. He asked us to send him a stand alone DVD player that runs on batteries, the rest of his DVDs, books, and a bucket of batteries. I've never researched into stand-aline DVD players before, and thought I'd try here. Our price cap is around $500, what is the best DVD player we can get for that price (or more if need be)
 
you can pick up a decent one at walmart really cheap..

batteries you can pick up from one of those hot deals section ... in bulk.

and when he says books does he mean mags ? ie. Mags for men.
 
So I should just judge it for myself when we go today? We don't have much selection around here so I was looking for good brands and models.
 
Or you can get him an xbox with the dvd option... but then again, if he needs a bucket of batteries, he probably doesn't have access to a proper outlet (or does he)?

With an xbox, not only could you get it modded, stick a huge hdd in, but then he'll have games and movies to play.
 
gameboy sp seems like a more cost effective way to waste time🙂 eats less batteries, takes less space. 500 dollars of gameboy is wow. u can get him two to play head to head with his buds

or maybe the guy wants a fuggin dvd player to watch movies?
 
Not so sure the GBA SP is a better alternative... The SP has a rechargeable battery in it, not standard batteries. If he doesn't have access to a regular outlet, he'll get about 10 hours to play the GBA and then what? No way to recharge it.

Walmart (instore and online) has a 4" DVD player that can last 4+ hours on batteries for $150. Got good reviews minus the relatively small screen.

Yes, the but 4" is a 4:3 screen with even makes widescreen movies even WORSE! You actually only get like 3" inches of our the thing. Terrible! The 6.5" is over twice the viewing size of a 4" 4:3 screen. Much better deal for only $100 more.

I guess that's subjective. I watch a 2.5" TV for six hours 4 nights a week, doesnt bother me too much. I mean you are in iraq, it would be cool to have a DVD regardless.

If he's going to be watching it for a relatively long time I would go with as big a screen as possible and about $50 or more in batteries (go to a wholesale club and buy a TON of them.) That one with the 7 inch screen in the link also plays cds and more importantly mp3 discs. Burn him a bunch of music on an mp3 disc for him to listen to.

Well, I've got a new guideline now after shopping around town and talking to my parents. We don't know what kind of electricity is in Iraq, and I need to look that up. But most likely, it will need to run on some type of standard battery. Lithium batteries are expensive and only last for about 3 hours. The Xbox thing sounds like a good idea, could that run on batteries? Can anyone help out with suggestions?
 
Asian countries (iraq included) probably have a different system of television. In the US, we have NTSC, I think over there they have PAL/Secam. Most DVD players, if they cannot produce a PAL/Secam signal, then your brother will not be able to watch DVD's on a television which was bought in Iraq. So think about that when you are buying a DVD player.

Ya.

As for the batteries, just buy a boatload of Energizers with the extra 250 bucks. They aren't going to have easy access to 120V over there, unless they get issued personal portable generators.

Hmmmm...

That might work. I think you need to figure out what they use in Iraq, and see if you can find a recharger that will work. If you can do that, then a few sets of rechargables would be perfect.

He *might* be able to recharge batteries using a normal US-spec charger if he has access to US-spec electricity in the form of portable generators or however they get power over there.
 
Just get him an inverter, a huge 12v RV battery and a PS2 and a 20" flat screen TV. Cheap, and it runs off teh battery!!
