We need to decide on just how a thread is deemed *** OFFICIAL *** or *** CONFIRMED ***.

With the recent proliferation of *** OFFICIAL *** and *** CONFIRMED *** tags, it would seem that we're in lack of one single set of guidelines to determine what thread deserves what title. As far as I can figure it, here are the rules:

Getting to be *** OFFICIAL *** or *** CONFIRMED ***

To be *** OFFICIAL ***, a thread must have a minimum of 50 replies before the original thread author can edit the thread title to add officiality. In accordance with the general spirit of AT, voting by popularity seems to be the way to go - and 50 is usually a breakthrough number when counting replies.

A thread is only *** CONFIRMED *** when it reaches a minimum of 100 replies. It's pretty silly to add the *** OFFICIAL *** and *** CONFIRMED *** tags at once; you can't instantly confirm anything! So in essence, an *** OFFICIAL *** thread is only *** CONFIRMED *** once it doubles its official reply count of 50.

The proper way to tag an *** OFFICIAL *** and/or *** CONFIRMED *** thread

Some people use one or two stars. Others use the generally accepted three stars, but with no space between the stars and the word OFFICIAL or CONFIRMED. This is sloppy. The proper setup for an *** OFFICIAL *** or *** CONFIRMED *** tag is three stars on each end with one space between the stars and the word between. If a thread is not titled in accordance with these guidelines, war is to be immediately declared on France.

*** OFFICIAL *** and/or *** CONFIRMED *** thread rule nuances

1. A thread can be *** CONFIRMED *** without being *** OFFICIAL *** first. If a particularly detailed answer is supplied to a thread question, it may be *** CONFIRMED *** as the AnandTech Forums source on that particular topic.

2. Thread originators must be at LEAST Senior Members for their thread to be considered *** OFFICIAL ***. There is no such limit on *** CONFIRMED *** threads (hey, anyone can be right).

3. Eakers approval is additional and has no effect on *** OFFICIAL *** and/or *** CONFIRMED *** standing.

4. These rules will only take effect if this thread becomes both *** OFFICIAL *** and *** CONFIRMED ***. No unilateral decisions can be made here!

5. Changes to these rules once they are *** OFFICIAL *** and *** CONFIRMED *** must be following by a virgin sacrifice on the altar to one Anand Q. Shimpi. In these modern times (with the scarcity of virgins as it is), a substitution for cornbread covered in goat blood instead of a virgin is marginally acceptable.

6. If at any point a member of the female gender if mentioned, pics are immediately and implicitly expected. Deviation from this rule will result in the worst wedgie that member has ever received in his lifetime, to be carried out by the closest and largest AT member to him.

Any questions? 😉 Yes, it was annoying to keep writing *** OFFICIAL *** and *** CONFIRMED *** over and over again. Even copy/pasting didn't speed that up much. We should have everything settled before that magic 100th post!

****CONFIRMED**** must have at least one link to an article of dubious factualness posted on either the register or the inquirer, as per the rules of Hardware, the originator of the ****CONFIRMED**** thread.

One that I intend to use from now on will be ***WITH LEMON SCENT***. Is there any regulations that should be adhered to when using this? 😛

BTW, I like it.

I forgot to write about that. Someone needs to write up a history about Hardware and how the *** OFFICIAL *** and *** CONFIRMED *** tags came to be! I nominate Windogg since he did such a great job on the story of Nef. 🙂

<< sully, you have way too much time on your hands. >>

It's a Friday so yes, for once I do. 🙂

I agree 100% and I endorse your efforts in this absolutely and without question.

IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THIS THREAD SHOULD BE LOCKED TO THE TOP OF THE OT FORUMS FOR A PERIOD OF AT LEAST 5 DAYS AND NOT TO EXCEED 15 DAYS

Bump before I jump in the shower. Surely more of you must want rigid guidelines to follow when deciding these important criteria! 😀

blah....is it really that important?

<< ***CONFIRMED AND OFFICIAL***
0sully is a fascist!
***CONFIRMED AND OFFICIAL***
😉

Just let people be.

leave him alone...he's canadien. 😀

How is it you already put *** OFFICIAL *** and *** CONFIRMED *** in your title??

You are already breaking the rules.

😉

I have decided to endorse your bill, since people have been quiteliberal with both official and confirmed lately.
