We need an official Counterstrike: Source server.

Hey guys. Some of you gamers may remember devioustrap and his generous hosting of the UT2K4 server a while back. It worked great for a little while, but interest wained to the point that it was useless to go through the trouble.

Well, I plan on asking devioustrap sometime soon what he thinks about helping us out with another server, and I wanted to get everyone's opinion on what they think. He will possibly require a couple of dollars a month to help keep things going, as we can't expect him to pay for everything out of his pocket. If you are interested in getting a server and some times going to where we can have some AT CS:S matches, post here.

If we can get atleast 10-15 guys who are willing to pay $2-$3 up front to help with cost, I will pony up $10 to help with costs. BUT, I'll still have to get a hold of devioustrap to see if he still has the resources available to host a server, AND to see if he even wants to do it. Also, I'm not sure if he can host a dedicated server without purchasing the game, so that could be a hurdle.

So anyhow, those interested, keep this thread near the top for exposure, and I hope to see most of you out on the battleground pretty soon :D.

Good idea, but I wont be using it probably enough to pay the money. I'm more of a single player guy.

Do they have a linux server available yet for it?

Not sure about a linux server. And we'll see what devious tells me about the server (if he's able to do it at all) and what, if any costs are occurred.

chrisbtx might be able to get one up for free. I say we see what happens there first.

I'm all for it though, sounds like fun! :)

In the next few days I will have a dedicated server up which will be hosting CS and CS:Source servers. The box is a Dual Opteron 244 with 1gb of ram sitting on a 100mbps full duplex connection in NYC. I'm in Texas and I ping 30's to the DC it's in. Hopefully it will be up in the next few days, i'll will be sure to post the IP's for you guys here.

Awesome. Well I will not bother devious with the hassle of setting up a server if you already have one ready to go. Let me know when you get it going.

Hehe, we have plans on eventually getting a server over in LA, one in Dallas, and one in Chicago. We are currently sorting out the ToS and SLA with our host, hopefully in the next few days everything will be gravy and our server will be up :)

Sound like quite the setup MCrusty! Who is the "we" that is helping you set up THREE CS:S servers? Be nice to be able to have an AT : Only server. Maybe some of the veteran CS players could offer to have an informal "training" hour for noobs to get them up to speed, show the tips and tricks, how to work as a team, etc...

Seems like most of the best players work as teams and it's hard to get any sort of teamwork going by picking a server at random.

it's not that hard to get teamwork going. If you're on terrorist, it is much easier. Everyone follows the guy carrying the bomb, a few can split off. Plant and protect.

as for counter-terrorist, split into 2 groups, each going to a separate bombsite to guard and/or defuse.

edit: but i'll be happy to teach a few fellow AT CSS n00bs :)

Personally I prefer picking a CT team and working as a support person. In the few games I've played so far, the biggest problem I've seen is having too many gung-ho guys rushing/looking forward and having a terrorist come up from behind and slaughter 3-4 people in the space of a few seconds. So I try to find a couple guys who are sticking together and hang behind by a couple feet, watching their backs. Seems to help the overall team score. Whenever I try to be point man I get hit with 1-2 bullets and am now a casuality instead of a player.

Oh, and I've heard there's a console command to change your crosshairs into a dot. Anybody know what the command is? It sounds like it would help with long range fire as the open "X" of the regular crosshair is too imprecise for me.

Interesting tips. I could be considered a newb to Counterstrike, but I think I play pretty damn good to be a solid support person, not quite a leader yet.

My main problem is that I am still learning the maps, therefore I'm not always sure of where I am. This will come in time, though. I also have no idea about buying weapons, as I don't know what is the best to use. And my problem here is that I never have enough time to peruse through the weapons, as it usually only gives you a few short seconds to buy things. I always auto-buy, and I think this is one of my downfalls. I'd like to stock some more grenades, but auto-buy rarely gives you any.

I have learned that flashbangs are much more effective than regular frag grenades :). But the odd thing is that whenever the enemy has ever tossed a flash grenade inside a room, they never follow up on it. I'm always able to recover, then go after the enemy.

naruto1988 - What I was thinking of was somebody coming up with a "CS:S Guide For Noobs" for people to read through and then possibly having a few closed session CS:S games where a veteran could critique people while they practice shooting/running/cover fire/grenade throwing/etc...

Maybe if MCrusty gets those CS:S servers up he wouldn't mind setting aside an hour or two every now and then for training purposes? Or possibly anybody who is running a CS:S server. Since it would be just a training run low pings wouldn't be too vital.

Just a thought.

Not a bad idea, although I wouldn't expect many counterstrike masters would take the time to do this. But I share your thoughts in how a match should play out. We definitely need to play sometime. My username is blurredvision81, so feel free to add me to your friends list on Steam.

That honestly depends on what you are planning on doing. The most versatile weapon for CT is the M4A1 (I almost always use it with the silencer... it results in less damage per hit, but more accurate shots), hence the reason that, so long as you have enough cash, it is the weapon purchased with the auto-buy button. It's about the only weapon I use when I can afford it. When I can't, I go for the MP45 (I think that's what it's called... regardless, it's the MP5 in real life) under the submachine gun category. I use these weapons to both stay on point and provide support. They do a VERY good job, as well (remember to burst fire, or your accuracy will be non-existant).

On the Terrorist side, CV45 is awesome. Very powerful and somewhat accurate. With this and the M4A1 you can shoot through doors and some walls and crates, which is definitely a nice thing. This is also the auto-buy choice, but yet again is the best overall choice for what type of player you want to be.

The only time I use anything other than the above mentioned weapons (aside from purchasing a Night Hawk pistol when I have no money whatsoever), is when I get mad at the other team having a bunch of snipers. I get the Scout instead of the Magnum, because it's just as accurate, reloads faster, and allows you to move much faster when you have it out. It doesn't give as much damage as the Magnum, but most of the time, you're aiming for the vitals (ie: head) with a sniper rifle anyways, so whether you get 143 damage given to them on 1 shot by the scout, or 180+ on 1 shot by the Magnum, the point stands that either way, whoever you hit is dead. The scout has the advantage in sniper battles mainly because you can move into position, fire, and get back into cover very quickly, and then shoot right back out (no pun intended) and repeat.

If you're in close quarters and are new to the game, just wanting to get some points for once (and you like to run point), try the Auto-Shotgun. There's a reason it's called the "n00b-cannon." Basically, one solid shot on a person and they are dead, whether they have kevlar and a helmet or not. If they aren't gone after the first shot, there should only be a few health left for you to get rid of with the quick follow up cannon shot (very loud, booming shot sound).

Hope that helps a little bit... there's so much more to talk about for each of the weapons, but that would take another hour or so to type, so for now, this is what you get.

Thanks chrisbtx for those tips on the weapons. I read somewhere in the Steam forums where someone made some script changes, and he added the ability to have multiple buy hotkeys. I've thought about getting the ability to do this, then setting hotkeys for exactly what I want at certain amounts of money. Like if I only have $2K, I'll want a certain setup, but if I have $3K, then I'll want a better setup.

And a question for MCrusty, like Creig posted earlier in this thread, I'm very interested in an AT only server, or atleast periods of such. I'm assuming you aren't setting up these servers just for AT, but for anyone. Is there ever a chance that a game could be set up, and a server passworded for AT'ers?? If not, that's cool, I didn't figure it'd hurt to ask. It's your money most likely, I just appreciate you putting more servers up with such a nice, fat pipe :D :D.

Well our plan for the first week or so is to test out our rig to see what kind/how many servers she can handle. We will have a mix of publics/privates on there with varying player amounts. It wouldn't be a problem to set one aside for the time being.

That's cool. As an aside, can I ask why you will be hosting these servers? Is it out of your pocket or with a company you work with? Possibly for a clan?
