We need a Battlefield MMO

Every few months I make a thread about how we need a World War 2 Online(now known as Battleground Europe) style game in terms of the size and layout of its campaign map, but with Battlefield style gameplay instead of the sim gameplay that WW2OL has. Imagine a world where that's the size of 150 Fushe Pass size grid sectors X 150(or 300 X 300, whatever), with 100 or more city or military base complexes. Or however many there has to be for however many players are expected. Battlefield 3 would be a great stepping stone for this. They are already making the base game itself for Conquest et alia, with that already done, they would just need to make the part that puts the game world across server clusters and everything that goes with it - but the base engine would already be done.

And so, you'd have 2 or more factions battling across a map. There'd be airfields scattered throughout, but you'd have to fly for a few minutes at top speed to get from your airbase to the target. And they could have some sort of thing where an airfield starts with 400 aircraft tickets, and can have up to 30 aircraft in the air at one time. This means that you always will want to return your aircraft to base once your mission is done otherwise your team will lose an aircraft. Granted, aircraft tickets would have to regenerate, say, maybe 20 per hour? That way unless the airbase is captured, you will never be totally without.

And while again this would not be sim grade, they could still model fuel, radar, model ordnance better(let you carry 7 laser guided bombs and drop them individually).

Normally I'd write a huge amount about everything that could go into this kind of game but this time I'll stick with an aircraft teaser only.

Agreed this could be fun but destructible buildings would need to be removed after a few hours everyone would be fighting for a pile of rubble. Maybe Planetside 2 will fill this?

Whats wrong with that? I value online rubble 😛

On an unrelated note and maybe possible indicator of how bored i am this saturday, you and the OP have the same post count :O

LOL, online rubble. Well, it would get reset every month or so. But the game world would be big enough it's not like everything would be turned to rubble in 1 day. Unless people were trying to do that....besides, some towns//bases that could be annoying to retake due to the cover they provide, might be easier to bulldoze it even while you own it...

When is Planetside 2 coming out? I heard March 2011 but it's not out that I see.

Whoa, wait? There's a Planetside 2? Fuck yeah...

Getting the huge dropships and then getting tons of people in them... then kamikazing. ULTIMATE GRIEFING. 😀

March is beta testing for current PS1 subscribers (not all of them). The game is supposedly close to done, just play testing it out.

why so you can have even more people sniping?
You must have been born without legs. A paraplegic is the only person who could possibly complain about sniping as much as you do. Seriously, if you're getting sniped, just run. Maybe even zig zag a bit, like a little bunny rabbit.

Well...an MMO of the kind I think of would need more people capping flags. The battlefield would be an evolving one with front lines moving constantly, snipers would get to a nice camp spot only to either have to keep moving forward if their team wins or backward if not.

Man, I was playing ArmA2 today. Don't care for the realism, it's clunky. But the huge world? That's what Battlefield gameplay needs to be injected into.

I also hate snipers. They dont cap flags, they dont drop anything useful, they rarely if ever spot and when they do manage to kill you after several failed attempts its irritating as hell. Being shot in the face by someone who is miles away and has only 1 kill to his 5 deaths is not fun. They should drop their pussy weapon and come join the rest of us with assault rifles or LMG's.

I was thinking. What if instead of a Battlefield MMO in the modern setting, it was a Battlefield 2142 style MMO? Except for WW2 Online, most FPS MMOs tend to be futuristic(Planetside, Global Agenda>Tribes Universe, etc).

BF2142 is much closer to modern than Planetside and Tribes Universe but advanced enough to give good technical options to the game.

Single player games and dedicated multiplayer games don't usually mix. BF3 is going to have both though. But hey - the base game, engine, the physics, it will all be there already. They just have to also build the server cluster code that lets them stretch a big map across server clusters, etc.

was there ever a fps MMO that was a success? WWII online wasn't and unless the masses catch on (which will likely not happen), big companies won't want to develop a fps MMO game.

WW2 OL sucked because it was also a realism sim, or tried very hard to be, and so was not fun. This is why I say a Battlefield style MMO, which would be a lot more fun within the same campaign map structure.

As far as I know, Planetside was successful, it's been around a long time and they are making a sequel.
