<<All of my pants are 34-36 waist and they fit properly, most of my shirts are XXL to fit around my chest and shoulders, and are dificult to tuck in sonce they are so huge at the waist. That being said, my doctor still tells me I am obese, and need to weigh no more than #170. I think I could lose about 20 pounds, but am afraid that I would be too thin for my large frame. Opinions?

First off, BMI is garbage. Although it may hold as a reference to the lazy man that never works out, it does not apply to the athlete and avid strength trainer. People like Mark Mcguire and Mike Tyson would be "obese" according to the BMI whic is a load of BS.
During my glory days I weighed in at 200-205 at a height of 5' 9.5". My measurements match your numbers exactly except for the waist measurement which put me at a 33". According to the BMI I am borderline "obese". If I dropped to 190-195, I would be been copletely ripped and on the cover of a muscle mag. If anyone doesn't beleive me, I have a pic to back this up.
As for your situation, I would get under 200 and stay there. I am also a little confused because you mentioned that your waist is 40" and you fit into 34-36, how is that possible? Also, if you want a metic to go by, use bodyfat %. It is a much more valuable metric than a BMI or any other of those weight/height charts.
