We had a professional bagpiper come to school today!

This morning in my Humanities class, we had a professional bagpiper come to play for us. He played "Scotland the Brave," "Amazing Grace" and a few others that I don't know the name to.

It was simply chilling - the sound of the pipes is awesome in itself, but hearing and seeing it live was even cooler. He said that you could get bagpipes at garage sales for pretty cheap - maybe I'll get some just to play around with...

BTW, I'm german and jewish - maybe I'll be the first such bagpiper!

yeah they are pretty cool huh? we saw a guy in Edinburgh, Scotland on the street corner in full dress playing. that is awesome. and i worked in an Irish Pub here in AZ and we had a few come in once in a while. beautiful music...

you can get a "trainer" at any Celtic festival for around ~35 bucks. It is a stripped down set of pipes used for learning, there are also different kinds of pipes (Irish and Scottish traditions use different types).
A set of pipes is an investment (they are not cheap!!). That is way cool. Whenever I am at a renaissance or Celtic festival a set of pipes playing halts me in my tracks!!!!

I went to Scotland many yers ago, and so a whole special event with Bagpipers - it really is an incredible and extremely unique instrument. The closest thing I would say to it (in terms of sounds) would be the Shenai (a beautiful Indian instrument), although that is still very different.

We have a bagpipe group here at State, and they're really really good. Awesome to hear, though sometimes the higher pitched notes get aggravating when played too much...

A bit tangential but...

I really can't stand when people refer to their school as "State". It simply makes no sense to me - of all the words in the excessively long title of the school (hence the reason for the abbreviation in the first place), State is the only word that is completely ambiguous! What the hell?
🙂

There is almost nothing more chilling than the sound of a couple hundred bagpipers playing "Amazing Grace". I heard this once and I will never forget the feeling.
