They have a huge natural disaster followed by another even worse disaster followed by a nuclear disaster and what did the Japanese people do? They did not riot, loot or destroy what was left. They even waited patiently in line for help.

When something like that happens in America...the people seem to use that as a reason to steal whatever they can find, smash whatever they want and kill each other without worries.

We could learn a lot from our Asian friends.

As compared to what happened in New Orleans, I really admire how the Japanese are conducting themselves.

Any nation that can recover after being nuked in 1945, can recover from anything. Japan has some rough time ahead, but I am certain they will overcome and rebuild.

Yeah I saw that on TV last night - the survivors were patiently waiting in line for food & supplies, no fighting, no looting. Totally different class of group manners.

For all their weirdness, Japanese are impressive people. We /could/ learn a lot, but that requires discipline. Not America's strongest suit....

In fairness, not all Americans are as pathetic and degenerate as the citizens of New Orleans. There are plenty of natural disasters in this country where people react in a commendable way, just don't expect that kind of behavior from the residents of Sodom on the Mississippi.

Yeah that cause someone would step up and whoop that ass Mr. Miyagi style if you got outta line.

Actually I've seen people cut in line in Japan (always tourists, never locals) and people are usually too polite to say anything.

And yet the Washington Post had a big article in the Style section yesterday about a documentary with yet more whining about New Orleans and Katrina. The way the Japanese are dealing with this disaster is quite impressive.

I don't recall people in Miami and Homestead Florida when they got slammed by Andrew or folks in San Francisco after the Loma Prieta earthquake acting like that . New Orleans stands out in my memory because it was somewhat atypical of the way we react to disasters here.

That's probably because shame is huge in Japanese culture. People don't cut because they don't want people to perceive them badly, not because they're afraid of the consequences.

Even after Katrina the rest of the gulf coast reacted much better than New Orleans did.

Americans can be civilized in the face of a disaster, but there will always be exceptions. Imagine, if you will, an earthquake devastating Los Angeles. The residents would remain calm until they started seeing disaster relief supplies and personnel being sent to wealthy neighborhoods while ignoring poorer sections of the city. Then things would get ugly.

I have a lot of respect for those folks. They're examples for everyone in this matter.

Yeah, it's been pretty amazing to witness everyone being orderly waiting in lines in the thousands for food and water then recycling and properly disposing of the trash.

The gov't was going to issue rolling blacks to conserve electricity but didn't have to b/c everyone reduced their electrical usage.

There are also cases where 7 hour long lines of car waited patiently without impatient beeping to fill up gas. Seven hours.

And also sometimes the supply trucks run out of supplies before they could get to everyone, and instead of those that didn't get anything shouting and yelling, they said they understood and left peacefully. People who received supplies actually shared what they had without anyone telling them to.

They really are an amazing group of people, to have something like this happen to them is a tragedy.

Not that I doubt it, but I'm curious if there's any articles or sources expounding on this? Just sounds quite noteworthy.

Yeah, the absence in their history of race based slavery, followed by race based jim-crow enslavement, followed by race based housing segregation leading to the creation of a culturally backward, permanent urban underclass filled with resentment towards society kind of helps out in these type situations...

So we're headed in the right direction.
