We could all learn a lot from this guy...

Yeh this will probably get locked but I just wanted to point out the story behind the first combat casualty of the war on Iraq. I saw it yesterday while reading USAToday.

Lance Cpl. Gutierrez

What touched me the most was this part:

Tobar said Gutierrez talked of becoming an architect but put college plans on hold to join the Marine Corps a year ago. Jackie Baker, the Mosqueras' adult daughter, told Spanish-language KVEA-TV here that Gutierrez "wanted to give the United States what the United States gave to him. He came with nothing. This country gave him everything."

He gave is life for this country and he wasn't even a citizen. Hopefully his story will inspire people here in the U.S.

And don't bother thread crapping, cause you won't get a rise out of me.

There were quite a few guys in the Marines that weren't citizens when I was in the Corps back in 71-75.
IMO it would be fair and proper if all people that we as a country take in were required to serve in our military.

Very poignant. 🙁

Surely you meant "immigrant" and not "illegal immigrant"? 😉

Sounds like he was a good man. We need more like him. I'm sorry he lost his life, but at least he gave it in an honorable cause.

might as well make it so that everyone in the country period has to serve. don't see why it should be limited to immigrants. not that i'm for conscription in the first place, though.

But he was an illegal immigrant. He wasn't legal until much later on.

All men have to at least register. for the draft. I think women should have to as well. I think there is a lot of merit to the idea proposed in "Star Ship Troopers" where you get citizenship and the right to vote by serving.

I have seen alot of the casualties of this war from southern california have been hispanic...im sorry for the families loss but im proud of seeing hispanics at the front lines fighting for our country

its so sad to see them struck down at such an early age i think that have been 19-21 yrs old

But he was an illegal immigrant. He wasn't legal until much later on.

"At 14, with his parents dead, Gutierrez followed the path of 700,000 of his countrymen to California. He made the 2,000-mile journey from his Guatemala City neighborhood without entry papers. He hopped 14 freight trains to get through Mexico. U.S. immigration authorities detained him.

Fernando Castillo, Guatemala's consul general in Los Angeles, says the United States doesn't deport Guatemalan minors who arrive without family. Gutierrez was made a ward of Los Angeles Juvenile Court. He was placed in a series of group homes and foster families. He learned English and finished high school.

When he reached 18, he got residency documents, Castillo said."

well i agree that women should have to register for SS too. however, it's not clear to me that conscription would bring any large improvement to our country. we already have the most powerful military in the history of earth, as is.

It's not so much to increase the size of our military as it is to pay your dues. If you want to live in this country and enjoy the benefits, then IMO you should have to except part of the responsibility of keeping it a free and (somewhat) safe place to live.

Of course this viewpoint is coming from someone who has served, and someone who is now pushing 50. If you had asked me my opinion back in the days before I served (the Nam era) I would have had another opinion.

I don't always agree with what our country does. I certainly didn't agree with Nam, but I feel I have earned the right TO disagree. Another benefit of having served. 😉

Well I would hope that anyone that comes to this country and anyone who was born here, realizes what they have and would want to serve. Unfortunately most don't see it that way and would rather just take. Thankfully we do have a lot of good men and women in the armed forces.
