wd800jb raid set vs. 74Gb Raptor

I currently have a single WD800JB drive. I'm debating on either buying another one and creating a striped set or buying a 74gb Raptor. Can anyone tell me which is quicker for gaming(MMORPGS & UT04)?

Another option I've been looking at is a raid set with both the WD800JB and 74Gb raptor in it. Anyone know if it is possible to combine SATA and ATA100 onto the same controller via an adaptor?

hi, don't know about which is faster (my guess would be the 2 80s in a raid) but right now i have an IDE on a SATA controller with an Abit Serllel adapter... is supposed to only work for Abit motherboards though.

74 gb raptor is the fastest non-SCSI drive available. I would recommend it over the WD striped array. I don't believe you can raid a SATA and ATA nor would I recommend it. You should use 2 of the exact same drives when making a RAID array.

For gaming about the only thing effected by the HDD speed is level load times (if your swaping to the HDD you need more memory not a new HDD) so in this case another 80GB drive + the raid card are going to have a higher STR (which will get you better load times) than a raptor but for general use and reliability you would prolly be better off getting the raptor, espicaly due to how unreliabe raid 0 is. Just my 2 cents... 🙂

I'd go Raptor. RAID just adds another level of complexity to your system in a negative way that you really don't need. For The easiest and probably most noticeable improvments the Raptor is the best choice.
