WD640AAKS read dropped to 3.5mb/s

Read speed was at normal levels yesterday. Today, the drive speed using HDtach says average read speed is 3.5mb/s, cpu utilization at 40%, and access time at 12.6ms.

My other two WD250's run at normal speeds.
Abit IP35
C2D 6400 @2.8 w/ most recent bios

Is the drive toast?

Have you trued running a harddrive scan from something like the Ultimate Boot CD (MHDD or some similar program)?

I havent run a HD scan from my ultimate boot cd yet.
Just completed WD diagnostics tools, all passed.

Computer Management/Event Viewer/System Log gives me an atapi error on IDE port 2. 50% sure that is the port this HD is connected to.

Also, in the event viewer, there are quite a few errors titled "disc" with eventID 51. This is for another drive, that appears to be working 100%. Diagnostics compare it within 1% to another of the same drive model in my system. The error is listed as a controller error.

Double check in Device Manager that the drive is still running in DMA mode. If it's been dropped down to PIO or MW-DMA2, then it's likely either the drive or the cable going bad(or just loose in the case of the cable).

It dropped to PIO mode. I'm getting more and more HD controller errors in the System Log.

Going to reseat the cable.

The drive reads at ~120mb/s on the first ~310gb, and near zero on the last 300 gb. Reinstalling the drive reverts it back to DMA-5, but as soon as a transfer is started, it quickly drops to PIO and pops up massive quantities of errors.

Thanks for your help. RMA time
