WD vs. Seagate: speed, reliability, noise

In general/on average, which one of the 2 companies produce the speedier, most quiet and reliable drives?

Also, how does 2 platter compare 1 platter drives? Any differences in speed and/or noise?

Right now, Western Digital has the fastest drives, but that seems to change every generation or two. Seagate had the fastest last generation, assuming we ignore the rediculously priced Raptors, of course. Seagate does seem to have slightly better reliability, but the difference between the two is nowhere near large enough that it should affect your buying decision.

reliable = random
speedier = depends on which drive you're talking about
quiet = unless ur pc is as quiet as a hard drive, this should be a non-factor

so it really depends on which hard drives you're comparing

another thing...if u get a sataII hdd do you need sataII ports on mobo or will it work with normal ones?
is sataII 3.0gb and sataI just 1.5?

these ones:

you've listed like 8 hard drives there lol...

randing from 160gb to 750 gb... decide on a size first, then pick out the best one for you

well i was asking which one of those is faster and more quiet. space doesn't matter to me.

i know there's differences between the technologies and # of platter / density of info per platter etc. That's why im asking

To make life simple, just pick up a WD 3200AAKS or a WD6400AAKS depending on your size needs. They are both cool, quiet and pretty snappy.

i dont have those available at my local store
how about samsung 750gb? how's that?

Asintu, any large drive is going to be faster than any smaller drive, unless that smaller drive is a Raptor (and not meant to be installed in a server). Samsungs are pretty decent, though not awesome, except for the Samsung F1's. The F1's are very nice.

nice cause i got the samsung 750gb

western digitals of late have been quieter.

if you go to silentpcreview they pretty much proove this.

the 7200.11 seagates are supposed to be better about it though. the 7200.10 ones were horribly loud (i had one and acutally returned it because it was louder than everything else in my computer, which happens to be very quiet)

its called "teh interwebs" aka "the internet"... seriously, just order it online. 640AAKS is the best drive choice right now (at reasonable price that is... you could always go for a 300GB raptor or a serious SSD)

(After reading SPCR) Wow. I have a 500GB 7200.9 Seagate and thought THAT thing was loud. Looks like the .10 takes the cake.

I imaged my .9 to a WDC for my boot drive - the noise at night was driving me nuts.

Yes, you can hook up an SATAII drive to an SATAI port and it will work just fine but be limited to SATAI performance. But thats not a problem since there are no drives that can saturate the SATAI interface.

any idea why the seagates are so loud? i hate the tcking in my HD, it feels like the old big foot or older HDs. if i woulda known it was loud i woulda got a WD instead.

My 500GB 7200.11 is pretty loud. Not first-gen 7200 ball bearing screamer loud, but enough that it's annoying in a quiet PC. Much louder (particularly when seeking) than a 6400AAKS and not even on the same planet as a 6400AACS.

I won't be throwing it away, but I won't buy any more of them.

Why would you resurrect an old thread instead of just asking the question? Geez...I read for like three minutes before looking at the date and realizing this was all old stuff.

I have a 320GB 7200.11 Seagate and the WD6400AAKS and I agree with DrBomb, the Seagate is noticeably noisier during seeks/writes. That clicking gets on my nerves. The WD is silent, I cannot hear it at all, and it's also faster than the Seagate.

As to why? No real idea, maybe their heads just clatter more when in motion or something?

If it bothers you that much, sell the SG on eBay and get a WD instead.
