I read that the WD SE is the fastest that was a few months ago I read that.

How does the IBM 120GXP compare?

I'm going to get the 80Gb model.

Which is faster?

I just want a fast one.

WD SE

IBM 120GXP

The WD SE with the 8MB cache should smoke the IBM. Plus IBM has left a bad taste in a lot of mouths with their mishandling of the 60GXP (or was it 75GXP?) overheating/failure issues. The 120GXP doesn't have the same problem, but IBM still dropped the ball on that one. If I was in the market for an 80GB drive right now I'd go with the WD SE as #1, then the Seagate, then the liquid bearing Maxtor with IBM last on the list of major manufacturers.

IBM has had a very bad track record as of late. Go ask anyone at GH!

I personally recommend Maxtor. If not them, then WD.

My 60GB IBM 60GXP died three days ago, after only ten months of use. I replaced it with a 80GB WD SE.

thanks guys.

I read the article and I currently have the 60GXP 60Gb in this machine and it runs fine.

The IBM 120GXP is cheaper but the price isn't that significant with prices as they are.

I'm going to get the WD SE one now:D

RossMan I'd go with the deals but I live in England and the deals don't apply here:(

I've had both WD and IBM fail on me, but I just got an 80 gig WD SE, and will never buy another IBM. Why? WD will cross ship, IBM won't. I've been waiting over a month for them to send me my drive. When my old WD failed, I had it in 3 days.

I wouldn't put ANYTHING mission critical on an ibm drive without nightly backups. The 75GXP fiasco has soured me to IBM drives forever, I trust WD a whole lot more.

Both my IBM drives still running great after 1 1/2 years on one and almost a year on the other ( a 60 and a 75) but you guys have scared me so much I just bought a MAXTOR. Good solid fast(?) drive.

Used to think WD was the best but not so sure now.

Wouldnt give Seagate 5 cents.

Want the fastest? If thats your only concern, get the IBM Deskstar IMHO.

There's a reason IBM left the Hard Drive business, and it's not because their products worked well.

Both me and a good friend have had IBM HD's go out on us. I will never buy an IBM hd again. I currently use a WD HD and have been happy with it for 9 mos.

Fastest? Check StorageReview...
Maxtors are just tweaked & better manufactured Quantums... and the late Quantums were FAST... and Maxtor's latest stuff is quite fast too.

No complaints on my Maxtor but even with the ata 133 interface card it just doesnt seem as fast as my IBM and test differences are nil also.

Have always bought Maxtors and Quantums and never have had a problem with one yet, even the 2 480M drives I paid almost $400 each for. :)

Only drive I have ever had a failure with was a Seagate!!!

Quick sumation since it appears you've been under a rock for the last year:
1) Deathstar hard drives; more failures than not.
2) RMAs out the wazoo.
3) Unacceptable customer service.
2) IBM no longer makes hard drives- they got out of the business after all the lawsuits.

Western Digital is the clear choice, and IMO personally, the only choice no matter what IDE hard drive we're talking about here. I'm on an 80GB 8MB cache WD drive right now and this thing is just crazy fast... and quieter than the previous drives I've used (20GB, 40GB, etc).

Thank you !!!

Wondered what that weight was on my back.

We were having a discussion, not a put down contest up till now.

I wasnt defending IBM BTW.

WD used to be my only choice and then they also went through a bad time.
