It's a good compromise between performance, price, and capacity. I have the 450GB version and am quite happy with it. Truth be told, if you have lots of RAM + Win 7 + use hybrid sleep, there isn't really much disk activity aside from restarts. This makes the price/capcity of SSDs not worth it in my mind.

I used to love Raptor drives, and I'm still toying with the idea of getting one for mass storage, but be aware that this particular drive is the previous generation model, not the new drive released in April of this year. The current gen have 64MB cache, while this one has 32MB.

Still, it's a good deal for what it is, a new generation top of the line 1TB Raptor runs nearly $300, so this is probably a better value.

Aw, no one is buying Raptor drives anymore now that SSDs are becoming more accessible.

Poor WD. Guess the insane markups have to come down now, huh?

AnandTech review of 1TB VelociRaptor (has benchmarks of 600GB VR as well as other HDDs)

At this price, almost makes sense. 1TB WD Black drives are $110. Cheapest 1TB 7200RPM drives are $70. If someone wants something fast but needs more than 256GB, this would be a compromise over a 512GB SSD.

WD should have put some flash onto the latest Raptor and made it into an amazing hybrid drive. Instead, they just keep inching their way up on the stats instead of making the changes people actually want.

Yup. It would make a good Steam drive. Having had a Raptor in the past I can say that it can make a big difference in games that have in-game loading.
This brings the Raptor down into "affordable mass storage" price range, while SSDs are over three times the price of this per GB.
