THis passport drive has worked on the computer before (win 7)
Today it comes up with a Code 43 error.

I tried it on 2 diff machines, same error.

Am screwed.

Have tons and tons of pictures of kids stored on there.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Is it natively SATA or USB? If it's a SATA one, you can remove it and try some recovery techniques as an internal SATA drive.

Either way, how do you feel about learning to use Linux, for a bit? A new version of Knoppix recently came out, and would be a great distro to for this (fairly easy to use GUI, and the live DVD should have several common recovery tools, too). It could be a Windows/USB issue, after all, in which case another OS could allow you to get get the files off.

43 is an awfully generic error. Uninstalling the USB controllers from device manager might work, too, if it's a driver issue (but, 2 PCs doing that, at the same time?).

I have tried uninstalling usb controllers nfrom drivers on both pc's.still the same error.

You're better off cracking open the case and connecting the drive internally to a PC. I've had a few external drives that gave me strange errors when connecting them via USB, but the hard drives themselves were fine.
If you can hear the drive spinning up, that's a good sign (although the drive's circuit board could be dead and the motor could still spin up, but that's only happened to me once).

you can also try checking if it shows in the bios boot drives (just to see if it's detected) and/or booting linux livecd. also you can go into windows device manager to see if it has any warnings (yellow triangles) and trying uninstall/reinstall them
