I'm looking to buy a few hdd's. should i get WD's SE hdd's or Seagate's Barricuda IV hdd's?

[edit]by the way, i voted either one just so i can see the actual poll results 🙂[/edit]

I have an 80GB Barracuda IV - it is cool, virtually silent (I cannot hear it at all with the case closed) and fast. I do some video editing: Tests have shown that the Seagate maintains it's maximum transfer rates across the whole drive. This is very rare and most faster drives tail way off at the 'end' half of the drive. Worth bearing in mind.........

The WD is louder but will have slightly better performance.

The Seagate is damn near silent but a tiny bit slower.

Reliability seems about the same.

WD $175-225 for 100 to 120Gb.

Seagate $75-130 for 40 to 80Gb.

So, do you want a bigger, faster, louder drive for more money, or a smaller, slower, quieter drive for less money?

It's pretty simple like many already mentioned.

Best performance: WD's 100 or 120GB drives.
Virtually silent: Seagate Barracuda IV

The HD is the slowest component in an average PC. I'd get the fastest thing I could get my hands on as long as it's reliable. That's why I ordered a WD1200JB. :]

Definately WD. Nothing wrong with the Seagate, its just too slow.

The sound from the WD isn't annoying. It doesn't have that high pitched whine like the IBM's do.

I've had 4 Seagate Barracuda IV's and they all croaked on me; not sure what's going on. When they worked, they were pretty fast. Not as fast as the IBM drives I used to have (Which didn't die!!) but you can't even tell when the HDD's in use. It's that quiet.

Western Digital has always been reliable for me. My friends will say otherwise, but I've always had great luck with WD.

Between those two I would choose the WD SE ,especially for speed.

🙂

Get a WD for the speed. If you don't need capacity that large, then go with Seagate. Both are winners in my book.

No experience with WD but I love my seagate, so quiet. Too bad my case is so loud from all my fans so I could enjoy the quietness.

I bought a 40GB Barricuda IV two months ago and it kicks ass!!! super silent!

My friends were surprised that it didn't make any sound even when reading and writing files.
