Is it normal for Western Digital HD's to give a faint click every now and then during read/write? I have a Caviar WD153AA.

How does the "click" sound compared to the normal seeking noise?

If the system hesitates during one of these clicks you "could" have a failure about to happen.

There should be some testing software, free, from WD. Look on their site.

Good luck!

Actually, I just bought the drive. The clicks sound like they're part of the read/write sounds, as they I only hear them whenever there's disk activity. They come at irregular intervals.

You could say they sound like clicks or maybe faint "taps". I ran the diagnostic, but it didn't report any errors.

Yeah I think it's normal for the lower end Caviars. Mine does it when read/writing. Sounds like some damn bug in there!

My WD drives sound normal, ie., clicks n' ticks, until I shutdown the system. When the heads park, they clunk. This has been going on for well over a year now. Normal? What is normal nowadays anyhow ??? Heh,heh!!!
