I got a WD 80 gig HD recently (SE), and when I received it I saw it had no bottom panel. The top was covered typical metal, but the bottom left the logic board and spinner exposed. I took it back to Best Buy, thinking it was defective, but they said that they come that way. Forgive my newbness here, but is that really the case, or am I being swindled? Thanks in advance
 
All the harddrives I've ever had had no bottom covering so I'm guessing your not being swindled. Two of them are WD drives too.
