WD Hard drive - problems w Mac / Windows

Hi

I have a Macbook and am having trouble with the WD hard drive. First I used it with a windows based laptop, and worked fine as storage. Then once i tried it on the mac i can only read the hard drive, cannot write to it on the mac system. Also, now sometimes the mac does not read the hard drive, and makes a repeating clicking sound.

To ensure compatibility to XP & Mac OS (snow leopard) what file format should i be using, and how can i tell what file format it is right now, and what software can i use it to work on both.


Just need a storage solution to be used for both mac and PC laptops.

I have the WD Hard drive "my passport"

I think that it needs to be FAT32
