Ok, so I purchased two of the 8mb 200 GB WD drives, one for my mother's computer downstairs, one for mine.

Here is my problem: My drive shows as 127GB, which I know is less than it should be even when the 1024 != 1000 thing about drive designations, while my mother's drive shows 186GB, which I believe is much more accurate. Details ensue:

My system:

AMD Athlon XP 2100+
Soyo Kt333 Dragon Ultra Platinum
512mb PC2700 RAM
primary IDE Channel:
Master: 80GB Seagate 'cuda IV
Slave: 200GB WD 8mb cache (problem drive)

Secondary IDE channel:
CD Burner
DVD burner

I think thats all the relevant stuff. Oh yeah, OS is Win XP pro, system is a homebuilt. Formatted to NTFS (only option, I thought about trying a FAT32 to make it easier to linux with, but NTFS linux stuff exists, its just harder)

Mothers PC:

Dell, P4 Xenon (forgot speed)

Primary HD: 37 GB SCSI

primary IDE channel:
DVD Burner
Cd Reader

from PCI IDE controller card, we have:
primary channel, master: 120GB WD 8mb cache
secondary channel, master: 200GB WD 8mb cache (drive is fine)

Is there something about my mobo not accepting slaves bigger than 127GB. . .

I need help. 60Gigs is alot to leave unused.

If it would help (solve problem) I am willing to buy an IDE controller card (I need more channels anyway) to run the drive on . . . .

Awaiting help,

Myself

Aye, you need a controller card. Your mother's system has a controller card, that's why it recognizes the HD correctly. =)

I am unable to get SP1, for various reasons, so will I be able to up it with a PCI controller?

I would get a promise card from compusa then if it doesn't work out you can return it. It should since the retail version includes a controller card in the box.

Is it that you can't get it ie: download it? Or that you can't/don't want to install it? If you can't get it goto yer local ma & pa shop and get them to burn the stand alone SP1 installer for you.

Yes a PCI ATA133 controller would likely also solve your problem.

Even pirate copies can be upgraded....a number of my friends have done so.

Your drives didn't come with the controller cards? The retail WD 2000JB drives should come with one. Did ya buy 'em OEM or what?

honestly dude you're just neglecting your comp by running xp without sp1...

if you cant download it get a friend to burn it, if you're running xp corp (which is what i think the case is) then do some reading homework, find a clean keygen and update your key and install sp1.

I installed Windows XP OEM to a WD 160 GB drive connected to the onboard RAID of an MSI MS-6758 motherboard. It was recognized correctly even before installing SP1. Make sure your motherboard IDE connector is an ATA133 compliant. Otherwise, use a PCI ATA133 controller.:)
