WD Backup program has 1.1 TB unavailable on my backup drive

In the past I was running WD backup (which is some crappy software that came with the WD Passport backup drive I have). I stopped, and had the program delete all the backups. I have a 2TB backup drive, and recently ran WinDirStat and it shows 1.1TB as "unknown". Any idea how I can reclaim this space without having to reformat?

I have run chkdsk /f and it said it found some free space and made changes to the file system, but I still cannot access it.

I am using Windows 7.

Thanks.

Go into Disk Management and see if the partition is covering the entire drive. See if there is more than one partition on the drive.

If there is only one partition on the drive, and you have enough space, you might be able to use a program (I like EeaseUS Partition Master) and create a partition for your data and format the other partition to get back the unusable space.

I actually figured this out. I had some old Windows backups on there. I was able to remove them using the Backup and Restore program. That's the only program that could see them. I tried to delete this thread, but was not able to.

Good to hear. Yeah, can't delete. But that's ok, because it will be 2025, someone will run into the same problem, find this thread in a Google search, and find that fix they were looking for.
