Believe me I have Seagate, WD, Maxtor, Quantum, IBM, Hitachi, Samsung, Toshiba, and Fujitsu drives all currently in operation. To me, the five year warranty is a plus as the Seagate drives I have just operate better, less heat, and have yet to fail once. I don't think you should have to pay for an additional warranty from a manufacturer. That just tells you that they don't have much faith in their own products.
Just because Seagate has a 5 year warranty doesn't mean that the drive is better. On multiple systems, with all the drives manufacturers you mentioned, they have all failed at one point or another, and it is around 1% of each other in failure rates.
Now that Seagate bought out Maxtor & Quantum, and most likely WD will get gobbled up by Hitachi, the players are going to get smaller, then it will be time to break out the lube.
