I have not been able to find out if this drive comes with a controller card in the box or not. Do you know if it does ? There is NO reference for a controller card in any web info I can find.
Or perhaps someone knows of a very low price on a controller card that can be purchased separately ?
To the best of my knowlege, above 137 gigs and a separate controller card is needed.

It's not mandated neccessarily for 137 and up. XP would need to be patched, i think that's all, but the seperate card isn't necessary - that I know for sure.

I have a 180 and a 200 both in my computer next to my stereo system and TV, one with MP3's and the other with AVI's. It's Win XP on a board with a recent Geforce chipset. And both drives show as full size.

This was similar to the WD hard drive deal at CUSA recently. What made the CUSA deal a little hotter was because of the 10% coupon. I believe the drive was $142 with tax after rebate.

This is still a nice deal though.

Got one and it doesn't come with controller card and if possible get one that was made prior to oct 2003 because after that date the drive has only one year warranty.

My friend got one of these drives and it died within 3 months -- weird? His HD has one year warranty.

The one that I bought at CUSA had a controller card. I didn't even look at the warranty though. It's probably one year, but I hope it's 3. Gotta go look. ;)

As was previously stated XP SP1 is what allows the os to read hds bigger than 137 GB correctly. The onboard controller affects what the bios sees. Belarc Advisor uses what the bios reports when listing the hds under hardware, yet uses what the os sees to report the total capacity and free space of the system and when listing them under "local drive volumes". You don't need a controller card unless you can't stand to see it listed in the bios incorrectly.

This deal isn't as hot as the CC November two $70 and one $25 gift card deal (net $85) deal or the Dell WD2000 double rebate mistake. I had hoped prices would have fallen more by now ...guess I'll wait a little longer to buy some more 250s. I'll pass. But, thanks anyway. It's better than any other offering in the last two months.

THanks, RVN,
Do I assume correctly that Win 2K with Sp3 will not read above the 137 barrier. In other workds that Win XP with sp1 will do so, but that Win 2K will not and Win 2K will require a controller card ?

Try this
48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows 2000

I don't know about Win2K ...you might need the controller card ...it usually comes in the retail kit
...maybe we should continue this in the os forum.

"Qualifying items must have been purchased between
01/25/04 and 01/31/04"

Better get it withing the next few hours for the $70 rebate to be any good.

CC and a couple of weeks ago CUSA advertised the Same Western Digital Special Edition Internal EIDE 250GB 7200RPM Hard Drive Brand/Model: WDC WD2500JBRTL with just about the same type of rebate but actually did a switch and gave out the plain Western Digital Internal EIDE 250GB 7200RPM Hard Drive. This package does not have the extra controller card and Western Digital 3 year warranty. Those who have brought these drives should make a complaint and try to get the package with the extra controller and 3 year warranty.

Even in the ad from CUSA from a couple of weeks ago shows the box with special edition written on it and a picture of the controller card that is added with the unit. While now given the box with out this labeling and picture. This is false advertisement or just the old bait and switch.
