I bought one of these 1TB refurbs from the WD eBay store a couple of weeks ago and unfortunately received a bad drive. The computer would beep when I plugged it in so it recognized the USB connection, but the drive wouldn't pop up in Windows Explorer. "Disk Management" would never populate any drives with the refurb plugged in, and command line "diskpart" would never finish scanning drives, so I couldn't do anything with partitions or formatting. Unplugging the drive made both of those tools work. I tried a couple of different computers and USB cables but no joy. Sent it back, got a quick refund, haven't ordered a replacement.

Whats the difference between the various models (not the 1tb vs 2tb), elements, passport, and easystore?

Element 1TB drive arrived today, currently doing a slow format, then error checks etc.

First thing I noticed is that it uses a weird (to me) tiny USB double connector, AFAIK the adapter cable that comes with it is called, USB to Micro B. Don't lose it, not cheap to replace.

That's been the standard connector on USB 3.x external and portable drives for years. Here's a 15-inch USB Micro-B cable for $4.40 with free Prime shipping: https://www.amazon.com/External-Tewmsc-Compatible-Toshiba-Seagate/dp/B0B5CVS4DJ. You can get a 3ft.+ cable starting around $6 at Amazon.

Ref HDD good for data, that you can lose. Most of them can be only with wiped S.M.A.R.T data.

not for backup, single drives are for transport of data you have otherwise stored in reliable devices.

I don't think the poster means they have seen 1TB SSD selling for $25 shipped, more likely some 1TB portable hard drives are still priced near low end 1TB SSD. I think I paid about $100 for the last 1TB SSD I bought, but I was not looking at cheapest, just some Intel on sale at MC.

The basic concept of "reliable" starts with no or very very rare single point failures. Single devices can be very very rare failure, but they are inherently single point fail able. For me to consider any portable device as reliable, the data needs to be securely stored on something else as well.

For sure. I back up on internal and external numerous times. Externals go into a fire rated safe.
