wd 1tb black disappears

I have a wd 1tb black thats been acting weird lately. sometimes it opens
folders and files very quickly and other times it takes forever. sometimes it will
show in my computer/properties and sometimes not. it runs much hotter than
my velociraptor which has no problems. i have ahci activated. just switched from
vista64 to win 7 64 and same problem. i havent been able to find much info on this with search
but what i have found always seems to involve velociraptor and 1tb black.
any thoughts? (scanned hd for bad sectors....no errors)

I see this issue popping up from time to time. I wonder whether WD's firmware for these 'Black' series HDDs is a little too aggressive in the quest of better performance, at the cost of power-related instability.

Check the SATA cable. They are notorious for coming loose.

Ditto. Also check if the connector/cable joint is solid, if they've been bent too much the wires inside may disconnect.

connections seem fine. im usually pretty meticulous about sata connectors, i know they are too dam delicate.
i rma hd and should have a new one in a few days. the combination of the two hds in forums with 1 tb problems
just caught my attention.
thanks for the input.

I've noticed also.

I had to RMA a 2-3 month old 1TB drive myself but I had noticed the failure postings on numerous forums before my purchase.

I'm not noticing as many as the Seagate .11 series before they acknowledged a problem but it seems to be more than normal.

RMA, let them know that it sometimes disappears from device properties. This is a clear indication of imminent failure!
