WD 120GB w/ 8MB cache @ Dell AGAIN for $187.06

From when I used to work for an online merchant, OEM was described to me as product sold at reduced rate for which support and warranty was through the reseller. OTOH, bulk, which again, is just the part (non retail packaging, and/or whitebox), with the full manufacturer's warranty, honored BY the manufacturer, NOT the reseller.

This is very misleading to the consumer, since most beleive that bulk packaged items are in fact OEM, which in many cases they are not, they are just bulk packaged, without retail boxing and/or accessories. Many people use OEM and bulk interchangebly. This is does not make oem=bulk. 🙂 Because by definition, support (warranty, tech, etc) for an OEM product is provided by the reseller, which is why its sold TO the reseller at reduced costs (usually for use in reseller branded pc's). Bulk is similar to OEM in that its not in retail packaging (imagine buying a 10 pack of cdr drives.. they come bulk packaged) however, thats where similarities end, because if there are any problems, support is through the manufacturer.

I used to believe what you believed until I started working at this merchant.

Ultimately, regardless of nomenclature, as long as WD provides the warranty and is 3 yrs rather than dell, and 1 yr, then its the better deal.

 
With harddrives, there are OEM's which come with normal manufacturer warranty and then there are OEM's which come with no warranty or a warranty from the vender.
 
Ok.. Decision time..

I have 2 JB drives and I'm keeping one, but don't know which one to keep. I have one of the OEM with a 1yr Dell warrantee (extended to 2 because I bought it with the AMEX Blue card) and one of these drives with a 3 yr manufacturers warrantee (possibly extended to 5 by buying with AMEX Blue).

Which one should I keep? 2 years seems like plenty for a warrantee. 5 years or even 3 seems like overkill. I'll probably want a new hard drive by then anyway if it hasn't failed by then.

I figure that there is less profit to be made on the 3 yr warrantee drive, so I'm leaning toward keeping the Dell warranteed drive.

Any opinions?

I really don't think your average person shopping for a hard drive is paying close attention to the warranty. They know that there IS a warranty, but whether it's 1 year or 3 years isn't going to make the difference.

Especially on this drive, which, by several independent measures, is the #1 7200 rpm IDE drive you can buy right now.

 
You're probably right. I can sell my 1 yr warrantee drive for what I paid for my 3 yr warrantee drive and have a 3 yr (Western Digital) warrantee for myself. I highly doubt that I'd get $40-$50 more for this drive just because it has the 3yr warrantee instead of a 1 yr.

Thanks for the info. For some reason I thought that they doubled your warrantee, but not more than 5 yrs.

Anyway.. It would still be a 4 yr warrantee with 3 coming from WD vs. a 2 yr warrantee with 1 yr coming from Dell.

i just got my dell hd it says on top

WD1200 not WD1200Jj

but under model # it says WD1200JB-75CRA0 is this the 8meg buffer one? I am not opening it until i know its the 8 meg or else dell is going to really hear from me.

no no no... take care in reading the product description, my friend... that outpost drive is only the 2mb cache buffer one, not the juicy 8mb one we're talking about in this thread.

but damn, u had me eagerly checking out the link, only to end up dissapointed. :frown:
 
got the drive today and run is serial for warranty: no warranty from Western Digital on it...
I have one year from Dell and another one from Blue.

AMEX Buyer's Assurance will not extend the warranty on OEM products since they have no manufacturer warranty to begin with. You can call AMEX Buyer's Assurance and verify that the program is open only to retail products that offer a manufacturer warranty and ask for a copy of the complete TOS. Basically if you purchased the retail boxed WD 120 drive 8MB cache drive (WD1200JBRTL) then AMEX will extend the warranty up to one additional year beyond the manufacturer's ,not Dell's, warranty. Otherwwise for the OEM version of the drive you are SOL!

Which is it? Will AMEX Blue only cover you if you got a retail box or if you got a 3 yr WD warrantee to start with?

Not only is it the 2 mb cache version, check out that rebate amount? $120 is a lot of money to have tied up for 3-4 months IMO on a $200-$300 item.
