Curious to see where the cut down GM200 chips end up. 980 is GM204, but the 980TI is full GM200. Where does that leave cut down GM200? Last time we had the 780 being cut down and then it went up from there, but now we have the 980 being a different chip than the 980TI.

Seems like another route would be to do a 1080 with cut down GM200, 1080TI with full GM200 6GB, and keep Titan X where it is.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I am interested to see if the 12gb vram is a power hog and result of GM200 having significantly less efficiency than GM204 or if there is any explanation at all (other than GM200 being huge and very hard to manufacture). Nvidia may also be doing a quick respin in the meantime to slightly fix the perf/w issue.

It will be awkward to have 980 TI outperform Titan X with Titan having no real advantage (no DP) other than uber amounts of vram.

You don't need any inside tip to know this was coming.

For it existing true, but unexpected for it to be fully enabled core. Will probably overclock better because it will have more tdp headroom than titan x with half as much vram sucking power.

Seems more logical to go up a series and name it "1080" or something like that than having the 980 and 980ti have different cores but I guess we'll see.

I thought WCCF was a unreliable source just after ad revenue....Maybe I'm mistaken.

Seems kind of strange NVidia would produce the 980Ti with only a memory configuration change....Time will tell I guess.

Not being a Debbie Downer but it just doesn't make much sense to me. I doubt the xtra 6gb's of ram on the TitanX would fetch the $300 alleged price difference.

Why is that the plan already?

I think nvidia has several options laid out but will wait on AMDs 390x before they make a move. I highly highly doubt that nvidia has plans to undercut themselves. I am sure they will if AMD forces their hand but it makes more sense for nvidia t wait on AMDs move first before they react. I am sure they have many engineering samples they re playing with. But they have to have a slot for defective GM200s, unless they have a plan to off load them as an OEM card or something.

I just think that it would be dumb for nvidia to have any finalized 980ti specs at this point. The 390x might be very potent, nvidia will wait to see. This I fell sure of.

Last time the 780 Ti had more unlocked than the Titan, besides less memory.

If they want a summer release; they will need to finalize them soon....980 Ti will use cut down chip or they've just blantly showed they have no problem screwing over their customers *technically Nvidia's done that a few times without issue; so very well could be a full chip instead of cut down*

Honestly makes no sense for them to not use cut down chip as they will want Titan X to remain the top dog; *which is in doubt with 390X as leaked scored for Titan X were right on the money; which shows 390X faster*

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I don't see them introducing the 1080 or any 1000-series products, not after having just launched the 900-series, what, 6 months ago?

However, I too am very curious to see where the cut-down GM200's end up.

Perhaps they are used in new Quadro cards, and are basically exclusively available in those?

And one other possibility, if the 980 Ti is indeed a full GM200, is that perhaps a new dual-GPU Titan or a GTX 990 uses two cut-down GM200 so they can use all the parts they produce, or at least most of them.
I cannot imagine they have anywhere near 100% yield for full GM200, so their must be chips that are being set aside for something. While Nvidia has a ton of money, they can't exactly just throw these away unless they actually do have like 98% yield or around there.

I think the most likely scenario if the 980 Ti is a full GM200 is we see a 990 with dual-GPU. Heck, that could even save room for a 990 Ti with full GM200 in dual configuration.

I previously expected to see the failed and cut-down parts from GM200 get put in the 980 Ti, and then a 985 or 990 release uses the full GM200.

This could be a good strategy for Nvidia to finally have a x90 dual-GPU card again, as opposed to only having that in Titan form. They skipped a 790 in favor of having a ridiculously priced dual-GPU card, but if they save up these lesser bins they could indeed launch a 990 at an affordable price, and later release a full GM200 version.

Why would a full featured GM200 be called GTX980ti and remove any options of placing a cutdown version in between that and the GM204 GTX980.

The "news" these days...

I expect a reversal of Titan vs 780ti. 980ti will be 2560 shaders and probably 384 bit but who knows with Nvidia and their 320 bit ideas.

The 3 - 4K surround configuration people can use the 12gb ram. May not need 12, but some situations may need more than 6 or 4. Just like the little window of difference between a 970 and a 980 memory wise. You can test there, and make one card perform noticeably worse than the others.

aren't you people glad you didn't buy the over price titan turd? :p 3 months of waiting just got you 30% or more value :)

Nvidia got the sweet deal of a life time with GM200.

Have GTX Titan X alone on the market for 3-4 months. Slap on 12GB to make it feel like a premium card and charge big bucks for it while cashing in big due to big margins.
R9 390X is announced in June and enter the market.
Release a 6GB GTX 980 Ti for $700 to not only match 390X price due to the HBM driving up the cost of the card, but also to match or beat 390X in performance.

I can`t see any way AMD is able to recoup much market share from Nvidia even with 390X because of this tactic.

Sad to see Nvidia kicking AMD because of the dire situation R&D wise between the two companies. I really hope Samsung do buy AMD and start bringing up the big bucks for R&D and hiring more engineers (the rumors about AMD engineers being over worked) to get the company up to shape again.
