WBCN in Boston is now GONE!

In a major shake-up to the local radio landscape, CBS Radio is pulling the plug on legendary Boston rock station WBCN [website]-FM (104.1) and is switching off the music for the first time in its colorful history in favor of sports.

Why would they move the sports station up the dial, from 98.5 to 104.1?

From my understanding, MIX 98.5 is moving to 104.5 and 98.5 will be filled with a Sports/Talk format. WBCN will be online only.

reception. distance from the crazy 88s.

WBCN may be going to that big mattress in the sky, but according to the CBS press release, it will continue to exist online at www.wbcn.com. (And on 98.5 HD 2 for people with HD radio receivers). We're checking right now to see what that means in terms of music and deejays and if this means the end of the Rumble as well. The "Sound Effects" team will have more on this in tomorrow's Globe and hopefully an update in this space later today.

NOes!!!!!!!!!! 🙁

RIP 'BCN
Today is the day that the music died.

although cbs ownership over the past decade drove them into the shitter, i'm still sad to see them go. i guess those in the industry have been expecting this for years. it's just a shame because they had become an institution, supporting local bands as well as superstars (they brought U2 and The Police to america, first to play led zeppelin, etc). like most things, the wild west days are too brief and rigid corporate structure moves in. not only was all of the music duplicated on other local stations, but management was obviously pushing more DJ "blah blah blah" - click. i don't need a dj to read me last night's internet.

:beer::beer: for morons, psychopaths and mental defectives coming to me live from the beautiful crime-free fenway.

Fuck CBS. Mix 98.5 is awful and why move it to 104.1? BCN already carried the Patriots' games, so there was at least some precedent for turning to a sports talk network. Health Tips

Ya, not too psyched about the change. T&R will remain, so I'm happy about that, at least. But losing BCN sucks big time. You do have to admit the music that got any play was getting a bit stale.

WBCN hasn't been good in years, I've moved onto my MP3 player and Pandora when I"m at work. The few times I do listen to local radio I go to WFNX. It is sad though, WBCN provided the soundtrack for my teen years.
