Warner Brothers and CBS Corp. announced plans Tuesday for the creation of a new broadcast television network, called CW, that would replace the WB and UPN networks in the fall of this year.

The new broadcast network will draw on programming from both WB and UPN, and will be a joint venture between Warner Bros. and CBS (Research), with each company owning 50 percent, officials of both companies.
WB's 'Gilmore Girls' will be one of the shows on the new CW network, officials said.
WB's 'Gilmore Girls' will be one of the shows on the new CW network, officials said.

"This new network will serve the public with high-quality programming and maintain our ongoing commitment to our diverse audience," said Les Moonves, the chairman of CBS, in a statement.

Prime time programming will target the profitable 18-34 age group, officials of Warner and CBS said.

The new network will broadcast such UPN shows as "America's Next Top Model," "Veronica Mars" and "Everybody Hates Chris," as well as WB programs "Beauty and the Geek," "Smallville" and "Gilmore Girls."

i think this is a good move for both. it's about time UPN was eliminated. Time Warner is much better off with the credential of CBS. CBS could use a station for a younger genre so this works out for both of them

UPN still had better rating than WB, but both had crappy ratting to go with their crappy shows.

mmm..What does mean to the WB and UPN affliate here in NYC (WPIX channel 11, WOR channel 9). Guess one will be the CW (whatever that stands for) and the other??? Not like I care since I don't really watch either channel anymore but I think the Mets signed with one of them for their local broadcasts.

I could be wrong but I don't think that UPN had better ratings. The only UPN show that's been doing good is Everybody loves Chris and it only started this season. The other shows has been doing horrible in terms of rating. Last I heard, WB has been doing pretty good in the ratings with shows like Gilmore Girls and Smallville.

Nope seasont to season to date UPN has a rating of 2.3/4 vs 2.2/3 for the WB. Though rating in the low 2s are nothing to brag about.

According to the reports, WPIX will become CW, WWOR will revert to being an independant again. Realistically, the only thing up for debate on the two is the 7/8-10pm timeslots. Everything else is already mostly either cartoons, network reruns, or syndicated programming (talk shows, game shows, etc.). Both already have 10pm news, and WPIX also has an early AM news program, so you're probably not going to see much change aside from WWOR losing the UPN moniker and it's associated primtetime programming (they'll probably put movies in it's place), while WPIX will get whatever primetime programming that'll be salvaged from the two.

This would have been better when UPN was basically the Star Trek network. Not so interesting now that the only shows they have are Everyone hates Chris and Veronica Mars. As long as Smallville and Supernatural are still on the air I kinda don't care.
