Ways to convince Daddy that it's better to leave PC on all day and night?

MaxDSP

Lifer
The convenience of having it turned on all day is pretty good. He keeps yelling at me to turn it off, since he sees it as a consumer electornics item...the more you use it, the less it's life. I dont think energy use is of big concern, since the PC goes into standby mode after an hour of inactivity, shuts off the USB ports, and I turn off the monitor when not in use.

ideas?

Tell him that the heating and cooling of the computer from turning it on and off can cause physical damage to the parts, and it's better to leave it on than turn it on and off.

there's more wear-and-tear on a hard drive when it's always spinning up and down then when it's going constantly 24-7

also, starting up and shutting down a lot leads lots of pretty big temp fluctuations...which aren't good for electronics in the long term...

The temperature fluctuation is a good point. Make an analogy between highway vs. city driving for a car with turning a computer on and off.

Starting up the computer every day or whenever it's turned off also takes a significant chunk of power.. leaving it in sleep mode doesn't use too much energy..

If I even say things like "hard drive" or "distributed computing", I'll get a blank stare. He dont know jack about computers...his motto is "Technology becomes cheaper every year", which has absolutely no relevance to this argument.

damn he pisses me off

most hd's goto sleep mode after a while of not using, ...u can even set that in windows.... i dotn think ur hd is churning rapidly when u aint usin it

a) get your own system, or
b) tell him that by the time the components die from overuse, they'll be obsolete anyway

your computer is made of all different types of materials, these all have different thermal expansion rates. Heating and cooling will cause thermal mismatch strain, enough of this cycle and you will fatigue the joints enough so that they may brake. For a visual effect take a paper clip and bend it back and forth a bunch of times until it brakes, this is the same concept. That's one reason, though seeing the average pc probably only lasts 2-3 years and the fatigue life may be well above that, the whole point may be moot, but you don't need to tell him that.

Just disconnect the HD and power lights.

Turn the monitor off.

Tell him that you turned the whole thing off.

How will he know otherwise? He is obviously an idiot.

1) heater
2) scarecrow (scares away the bogeyman)
3) nightlight
4) overpriced high-tech state-of-the-art security system
5) **Use this one as a last resort!!** Downloading pr0n. It's a pr0n-o-matic machine. Hey he benefits too... Need I say more?

More emphasis...
6) pr0n
7) pr0n
8) pr0n
9) pr0n
10) pr0n!!!!!!!!!

That probably won't work if you've got a 60 mm delta.

We know what you're up to..... At 1 AM, you're gonna sneak over to his computer...... open up that browser.... make sure everyone is asleep and ........ get some of that AT0T goodness.

Do you ever have anything constructive to say? A day or two ago you told someone that he should dump his girlfriend and tell her it was because "she was a f@cking cow", now you have deduced that this person's father is "obviously an idiot", plus various other nuggets of knowledge. WTF is your problem? Are people picking on you at school cause you are different?

Sorry for crapping in your thread MaxDSP.
