Wayne Gretzky had some insane career scoring numbers.

I find the following stat to be quite epic:

If Wayne Gretzky ended up scoring ZERO goals in his career, he'd still be #1 on the career points list.

#1) Gretzky: 894 goals, 1963 assists = 2857 points (1487 games played; 1.92 PPG)
#2) Messier: 694 goals, 1193 assists = 1887 points (1756 games played; 1.07 PPG)

Wrap your head around that and get back to me when it explodes. Oh yeah, and inb4 sports suck, repost, etc.

Yeah, it's nuts. How about 92 goals in one regular season too!

Lemieux ALMOST averaged as many points per game, but Gretzky did it over a WAY longer period.

Also, it's comical how far Gretzky is ahead of number two in both Goals and (especially) Assists. He also leads goals/assists in playoffs too.

Those Oiler teams with Jari Kurri were insane. Weren't the goalies the best as well? Grant Fuhr and one other, IIRC.

At the time he retired, I believe Gretzky held over 50 NHL records for regular season and playoffs combined (including the record for holding the most NHL records!).

Andy Moog FTW!

<-- born and raised in Edmonton while the Oilers were tops. Now I could give less than half a shit about hockey, and could probably name maybe 2 Oilers off the top of my head from the current team.

Even beyond the numbers was his amazing ability to make stuff happen. When you have someone so amazing on the ice, the gravity of that player affects everyone else on the ice and how they play. Double team coverage results in someone else being free and scoring, intimidation, etc are all things not calculated yet very clearly affect the outcome of a game.

Those are amazing numbers indeed.

Also : Insert obligatory crack about how it is a shame that the coyotes as a team can't match that number here.

Guys, guys, you can't forget that he and Lemieux played in an era where goaltenders were floppers and defensemen had terrible positioning (more hacking/grabbing than positioning - nobody dared touch Gretzky of course). Today's systems and use of game tapes makes those feats impossible... not to mention much bigger and better conditioned players as a whole. Watch some Youtube of his goals or assists and pay attention to what the goalies or defensemen are doing... goalie size... backcheckers? It's laughable - if you watch any hockey today you could see a huge difference.

Gretzky may still be great if he played now but it would be impossible to put up the same numbers in the NHL. Bank on it.

I've always liked this statistic:
By the age of ten he had scored 378 goals and 120 assists in just 85 games with the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers

Most of Lemiex's career was spent at under 100%. His back problems were throughout most of his career. If he was 100% and had a full career, I think he would have given Wayne a run for his money.

Put today's best players in yesterday's era against yesterday's goalies and you'll have even more "insane numbers". Was that not clear?

No doubt he was above any player in his time, but if we're talking numbers here, there's the reason nobody today will hit 92 goals.

All his records:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L...ments_by_Wayne_Gretzky

And interesting:
Wayne Gretzky finished his career with a 1.921 points per game average. Only Mario Lemieux, then retired, had a better points per game average at that time. Lemieux since came out of retirement in 2000 and played until the 2005?06 NHL season. Lemieux's points per game average has dropped to 1.883 before retiring once again midway through the 2005?06 season. This gives the record back to Gretzky.

sports, or stats. Take your pick. :)

Imma have to go with stats because Hockey is barely a sport ohhhhhhhh!!! :p

As opposed to something like baseball, our national pasttime, where their highest paid players play once every five days and their teammates stand out on the field for 3 hrs and touch the ball maybe 5 times a game? Did I mention foul ball after foul ball - great to watch too...

For the money, I'd definitely get my kids into baseball... but as a sport - you've got to be kidding me.
